Tap at Mikkeller Bangkok. 12.5%. Poured a clear dark brown with a round off white head. The aroma is malt, molasses, alcohol, liqourice. The flavour is moderate to strong bitter with a rich liqourice alcoholic palate. Medium to full bodied with soft carbonation. Pretty awful as far as Barley Wines go. Absolutely no sweetness at all. Rather like a dry porter gone wrong.

Tap at Hair of the Dog, Phloen Chit, Bangkok. Poured a hazy medium amber with a thin white head. The aroma is grainy malt with some light sweet honey notes. The flavour is light bitter with a grainy earthy malt light floral hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.

The flavour is dry watery fruity melon with a light crisp fruity refreshing, light woody hop, light spice palate. Medium to light bodied with soft carbonation. The flavour is moderate sweet with a smooth, rich, woody resin hop, biscuit malt palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. No way is this even close to an ESB. That’s one hell of a "take" on an established style.
