Can @ JM Athenia Boutique Hotel Hoi An beach. Almost clear, deep golden body under a big, stable off-white head. Aroma of malt, toffee, citric fruits, citric fruits and hint of pine. Taste is balanced sweet malt, citric fruits, toffee, light bread, pine and decent bitterness. Balanced body with a smooth malty, fruity and bitter aftertaste. A really nice, no nonsense classic IPA.

I'm getting a strong yeast note in a lot of these Vietnamese beers, which I'm starting to think is just a feature. Other than that it has aromas of pine needles, pepper, dry biscuit and a little mango. Nice bitter finish that's not overpowering.

Phew. Thought this was going to be a Summer ale. I'd call it a sour hefe, which gives it a Saison vibe. Aromas of banana, clove and cinnamon. The taste is overwhelmed by a sharp lemon taste. Not for me.

A full bodied pale ale with aromas of lime, pepper and some light floral notes. Soft but full citrus notes in the mouth.

Can at home, courtesy of Haki and Imi. Copper pour with an offwhite head. Light caramalts meet pine and zest, decent body, ok intensity. I would’ve loved this 10 years ago.

Draft at East West, Da Nang. Poured a hazy yellow golden colour with a lasting frothy white head and lots of bubbles. The aroma is grainy, tropical citrus. The flavour is moderate bitter and sweet, with a light, crisp, fresh, mango, melon, earthy, woody hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium to light bodied with lively carbonation. I really wasn’t expecting much but some interesting bittering hops saved the day..

Draft at East West, Da Nang. Poured a mostly clear dark brown colour with little life. The aroma is roasted malt, aromatic. The flavour is moderate liqourice bitter, super light sweet, with a smooth, roasty, dry, surprisingly light, charcoal, earthy, mineral, light liqourice bitter palate. Surprisingly light, no body and absolutely does not taste like a 9.6% beer. Where was the spice? Extremely disappointing. Tasted like a poor home brewer beer.

Draft at East West, Da Nang. Poured almost black in colour with a lasting frothy light tan head. The aroma is roasted malt, liqourice and light caramel. The flavour is moderate liquorice bitter, with a smooth, rich, roasty, coffee, light warm boozy alcohol, liquorice bitter palate. Medium bodied with average to soft carbonation. Didn’t get any figs and this is absolutely not a milk stout. Otherwise, it’s ok.

Draft at East West, Da Nang. Poured a clear golden colour with a mostly lasting frothy white head. The aroma is malt, yeasty and floral. The flavour is moderate to light bitter, with a crisp, bubblegum popcorn yeasty, floral, light hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Not great and for me hints of diacetyl.
