Atwater currently holds true to making traditional German style lagers, along with unique boutique ales. Rieth says, “We’ve analyzed the marketplace and studied what consumers really want in a beer and have successfully provided this for them”. Atwater keeps things fun around the brewery, never taking things too seriously; a favorite slogan around here, “We drink all we can and sell the rest”. Rieth says the company recently became international when beer was shipped to Munich, Germany in a partnership with an all-American craft beer tap house. Today the brewery is thriving and expanding at its original Joseph Campau location, including a full scale Biergarten and Tap House. We recently opened Atwater in the Park which is located 8 miles from the brewery in a renovated church serving unique styles and great food, along with Atwater Spirits and Wine. Atwater in Grand Rapids opened its doors in October 2016 and is located in the renovated Rowe Hotel downtown.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled in 4/2015. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy reddish copper color with a 2 finger dense and rocky light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of light sweet/tart cherry, wheat, cracker, toasted bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Okay aromas with solid balance of cherry, pale malt, and earthy hop notes; with very weak strength. Taste of light sweet/tart cherry, wheat, cracker, toasted bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal/spicy bitterness and fruit tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of cherry, wheat, cracker, toasted bread, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Good balance and solid robustness of cherry, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; with a good malt/bitterness/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and slightly creamy/acidic mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.5%. Overall this is a decent fruited wheat beer style. All around good balance and solid robustness of cherry, pale malt, and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A fairly enjoyable offering.

Bottle, 12oz. A hazy, golden beer with a small, off-white head that lasts. It’s peachy, grassy and cellary with a touch of perfume. It’s medium to full-bodied, with a soft carbonation. There’s a light bitterness in the flavor, some sweetness too, with peaches, overripe banana notes, grass and some cellar. Short finish, 150613

Bottle. A dark brown beer topped by a small, dense, beige head. The aroma has lots of vanilla, some mocha, dark chocolate and a roasted touch. It’s full-bodied, smooth and semi-dry on the palate, even though there’s some vanilla and sugar sweetness. Roasted malts, chocolate, dark coffee and too much artificial feeling vanilla in the flavor. Oaked hints. Lasting roasted and vanilla-ish finish with dark chocolate and coffee. Too artificial vanilla going on here, else it’s quite nice. 150610

From tap.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very dark brown color with orange highlights and a small foamy tan head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was smoke, wood and bacon. The flavor was smoke, wood, bacon and a bit of toasty malts. Long finish of wood and bacon. Medium body and a bit flat. Meh.
