Deep brown coloured body with a thinnish tan head with large bubbles rising from the side. Aroma of nuts (you guessed it), roasted malt, some coffee scents and even a bit of sweetness. Medium-bodied; Strong malty flavour with a good nut backbone and some mild hops still detected. Aftertaste shows some nuts and mild malt - nothing spectacular. Overall, a good beer with some nice flavours - nothing amazing, but not a horrible brown ale. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Merchant’s in Dearborn, Michigan on 25-December-2007.

Bottle. Essentially translucent copper-brown body, thin buff head. Watery, cerealy, slightly nutty nose. Weak grassy hops. Flavor was pretty much the same as the 120W 60 and Ghettoblaster, but less hoppy than the 120W 60, with only slight bitterness. Bland and diluted.

Bottle. Clear amber-orange body, thin off-white/buff head. Light cerealy nose with light citrus and pine. The body reminded me of Ghettoblaster with its backbone of dry, slightly nutty, cerealy malt, but this time with bitter piney hops. Watery and bland. Simply too thin.

Motor City Motown Lager, newly bottled. Hazy straw body, thin buff head. Grassy nose, light tanginess, lemon. Tangy, lemony body, grassy, with light Cheerios and a hint of green apple.

Translucent copper-brown body, thin-medium buff head. Slightly nutty, bready nose, reminiscent of Cheerios, backed by grassy hops. Amazingly watery body, swamping the light cerealy nuttiness and weak grassy notes. Biscuity. Inoffensive but diluted and weak.

Small beige-cocoa head is neatly retained, but eventually fades to partial cover, leaving very light lace. Deep, deep amber-rust colored body has a light haze and tight carbonation.
Strong nutty-hoppiness in the nose is extremely dominant. Let’s see, either A) they just boiled some horribly old hops for too long and got little bitterness and tons of astringency/nuttiness B) they used some really reserved, low alpha English hop (or saaz) as the bittering hop and got neither much flavor or bitterness. Whatever the case, not enough fruitiness/brightness and too much dry floral hops, nuttiness and astringency. Crystal malt and/or some other lightly toasted malt gives iced tea, sourness and breadiness. No alcohol noted, though and no flaws. Medium strength.
Dry, nutty, toasty, astrigent, with notes of soggy hop tea and overboiled hops galore. Too dry, with no softness on the palate whatsoever. Decent carbonation level and moderately tight. No flaws.

Deep reddish-brown body, thin/medium creamy off-white head. Rich chocolatey aroma, earthy, with hints of caramel and grape. The body is chocolatey and quite toasty, with light sweetness and a bitter, earthy finish. Rather light, though. Decent, but nothing special.

2004 draught @ the brewery, late December. Havent seen a barleywine with an appearance like this since I tried HOTD Fred almost a year ago. Dark golden yellow with some light copper tinges and a small white head. Lightly hazy. Aroma of bitter, citrus hops, like bitter orange peel almost (though there is none in here). Vanilla, almond liqueur and a light cara pils malt accent on the nose as well. Flavor is truly unique, it’s a mix of bitter hops and vanilla, almond and honey for the malt flavors. Seemed like there was an herbal or spice note in here, which I asked the brewer about, who said there were no spices, just lots of cascades. It’s quite sweet but has a lingering dry, bitter, citric hops quality that is not unbalanced in the least. Moderate house yeast character could be what is accounting for the spice flavor I detect. Medium-full body, lightly bubbly, somewhat creamy mouthfeel and a finish of hops and sugar. Very similar to Fred, seems like it’s modeled after the golden American barleywine. Whatever the stimulus, it’s a very unique and flavorful beer.

2004 draught @ the brewery. Thick looking (moderately hazy, wavy) deep yellow, pale gold body, with a small white head. Aroma of lemon, light grassy hops, honey, almonds, light grains. Flavor is lightly sweet, with a good malt-influenced medium body, with light hops notes on the edges. Very easygoing beer. Lightly watery, but to style, with a ever so slight touch of yeast flavor. Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly creamy almost, with very low carbonation for the style. No stale, or adjunct flavors here. I would think this one is a premium lager. Light herbal/citrus notes mix with the honey-grain flavor on the finish.

Botte and on tap. Nice presentation, off golden appearance with plenty of brown tinges. Good cream like head. Nice cloudiness, glad to see sediment in the bottle. Has a subtle yet hoppy smell. Opens with a fresh hops flavor that is quickly doused with some mildly sweet pale or crystal malt. Not sure. Flavor lasts thanks to the quality brewing. Slightly sourish finish of hops. Has more body than it does flavor. Not sure what to say about this one. Good palette and mouthfeel, flavor is good for a mild ale, just a tad off on something. . .
