Barleywine brewed with Muscovado, Pistachio, Lemon and Orange zest and cinnamon. Rye bourbon barrel aged. Well that will be me 40k then, slightly delayed because I had to spend 10 mins getting past the bomb proof wax on this bottle - jesus! At least I'm sitting with the Mrs, nothing to do and all day to do it, relaxed and happy. Near opaque dark brown beer, small and relatively short lived tan head. Smooth palate, a mild viscosity, reasonable fine carbonation, fine for the style. Soft rich malts, dark chocolate and dark chocolate cream. Lots of ripe bourbon soaked fruits. Floral aspects in the mid. The pistachio and cinnamon are really well integrated as is the orange and lemon. Once again, the Mad Scientists take a broad and diverse range of ingredients and balance them well. The end result here is a kinda semi dessert barleywine cocktail mash up. Interesting and very quaffable.

Can. A very expensive one from the Nitrox pub in old Kotor. A slightly oily looking opaque dark brown - black beer, small tan head. Smooth and slightly viscous palate, decent fine carbonation on the back end. Abundant chocolate malts, dark chocolate, milk chocolate and some of that weird Tonka pseudo chocolate. The marshmallow sweetness is obvious and is very well integrated. It never becomes cloying and balances out the mild dark chocolate bitterness very well. It's a shame that the best beers I have had in Montenegro are Hungarian imports but, Mad Scientist is brewery I will be paying attention to going forwards. Heavy hitting beers are nothing new but delivering them well integrated and with nothing out of balance is no trivial feat.

Can. Very expensive can from the Nitrox pub in old Kotor. 10.6% version. Pours an oily looking opaque dark brown, a tiny brown head does not last. Smooth and slightly viscous palate, reasonable fine carbonation. Tangy dark malts, good dark chocolate and a little dark chocolate cream. Dunno about Tokaij barrel, I would have guessed Madeira and Tawny Port barrel. Rich ripe fruits either way, a savoury wood aspect underneath. Okay, back end shows some of that Tokaij marmalade and floral orange intensity. Walnuts? Yeah maybe a side flavour if you are looking for it. Vanilla and cocoa supremely well integrated. Another rich complex and tasty affair from the mad Hungarians.

Can. Very expensive can from the Nitrox pub in old Kotor. Oily looking black beer, a decent bubbly dark brown head. Palate is smooth and viscous but has decent fine carbonation on the back end. Dark chocolate malts, a little dark chocolate cream. Some ice cream van chocolate syrup. Fair old chilli wack here, certainly leaves the soft parts of your north and south sizzling after the swallow. Mezcal brings all sorts of things going on. Ripe fruit liqueurs and licorice flavours, rich. The chilli aspect is a tad too much for me, not the hotness but it's dominance. The Mezcal barrel was a beaut and should have been given more room to shine. But this is a minor not pick in what is a rich, rewarding and pretty darn quaffable brew.

Cloudy yellow pour with a small white head - mango (quite a bit), some milk/cream and herbs.

Cloudy red pour with a smallwhite head. Strawberries, vanilla, milk/cream, rasberries as well - nice, but more like a milkshake than a beer.

Can. Very expensive one from the Nitrox pub in old Kotor. Near opaque dark brown beer, small tan head. Smooth palate, light and mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Another curious BW from this brewery, the base beer, to me, was quite savoury and yet, the BBA version seems to have taken this in a different direction completely! I get the bourbon fruity richness and vanilla oak barrel but, there is also orange blossom and some interesting things happening between the maple savoury base beer and the sweeter BBA here. A little candy fruits. Some alcohol warmth. A little spice on the airy smooth finish that also shows base beer fig and prune. Good all round barleywine, a stack of things going on, good bourbon barrel etc etc. Colour me thoroughly entertained.

Can. Very expensive one from the Nitrox pub in Kotor old town. 10.5% this version. Near opaque dark amber brown beer, small tan head. Airy palate, mildly dry, decent fine carbonation. Slightly thin bodied malts in this BW but, a good dark toffee, really not that sweet. The maple appears to have turned savoury here, no sickly sweetness, that's fer sure, some soy. A little ripe fruits on the light finish, as in prune and date but, again not sweet. Interesting barleywine, quite light to drink but, pretty savoury. Yeah, enjoying this.
