Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

(500mL bottle from the brewery) Pours very dark brown, nearly black, with a small tan head that receded quickly without lace. Aroma quite hop forward, has ripe mango, orange, fresh pine and menthol, slightly earthy, a bit of coffee, lightly roasty, some sweet dark malt and chocolate. The dark and roasted malts show a little more on the palate, roast coffee, semisweet chocolate, dark malts, some orange and earthy, "green" hops. Some sweetness initially but quite dry, hoppy and moderately bitter as it heads towards a dusty roast and hops finish that lingers. Fairly average body and carb. A good black IPA, hops slightly greater than malts on the nose and reversed on the palate. This is a pilot so maybe a slight re-balancing may be in order, but it’s a very good start for sure - I thought drinking with food really elevated the beer.

(500mL bottle from brewery) Pours a slightly hazed pale yellow-gold with a small, fine white head which dissipated without lace. Aroma is fairly lemony, lactic yogurt-like notes, slightly bready, with the white wine barrel character restrained but present. In the mouth it is quite sour-tart and lactic, lots of lemon, lightly doughy, a little malt sweetness too despite the sour/dry nature overall. The chardonnay and wood from the barrel build in the finish, but are noticeable earlier as it warms. Fairly light body with strong but soft and effervescent carb. Flavourful but fairly light and quenching, puckers the mouth without being too sour. Barrel character very well-integrated with the beer. Good stuff.

(500mL bottle from brewery) Pours a lightly hazed pale gold with a smallish head of fine white bubbles, no lace. Aroma dominated by tequila barrel character, both agave and wood, a bit fruity and citrusy, lime I think, and lightly sour/tart and lactic. In the mouth, fairly lactic and sour in character, slight sweetness to the malt though. Initially a little fruity, lemon/lime, tangy, and that tang lingers as it dries towards the finish with a big kick of tequila and wood. The more it warms, the earlier in the sip all that tequila appears. Mouthfeel is average, carb high but soft and effervescent, cleansing. The tequila definitely stands out in this beer, maybe not as well-integrated as the chard version but interesting and still quite drinkable.

Hazy golden color, light white head. Very dry beautiful fruity nose with brett and oak. Very delicate. Excellent mouth feel, mildly tart, very lightly, but balanced with significant amount of hops with oak and a touch of vanilla. what is really amazing is how integrated the beer is. Flawless execution. Amazing depth. Every sip from start to finish is slightly different. Light oak funky brett finish. Excellent.

(500mL bottle of the 2014 version) Pours a slightly hazed dark pink-tinged peach with a small white bubbly head and a little lace. Aroma of citrus peel (especially orange), floral, slightly grassy, bit of very "Bellwoods" yeast character. On the palate, begins with a bright and juicy orange and pink grapefuit character and pale malt, just a little sweet, paired with a subtle but distinct floral hibiscus note. Hopping is not strong but makes its presence felt mid-palate, wet grass and lime zest. A bit of grain appearing on some sips in the finish, light hop bitterness, dry, an orange peel/oil note persists long after the beer is swallowed. Body pretty light but carb soft so refreshing without being sharp. Fruit and flowers held well in check, more fruity APA than fruit beer. I think it could even stand more additions, but good in the hot sun.

Beautiful deep golden color. Huge mango, piney nose with a touch grapefruit and caramel. Big malty backbone, very clean, with lots of mango, caramel and pine notes. Full bodied, really well balanced and beautifully executed. Big bitter lasting finish. Wonderful IIPA. Stone fruit also lingers in the finish.
