Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

Cloudy dull blond color with no head. The aroma is dusty and fruity, with some tequila note. Lean mouthfeel, the agave and tequila dominates, there is some bread note, light fruits, very light sourness.
Pleasant.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours a clear pale golden with a small white head. Aroma screams out tequila, with not much else - surprisingly nice. Flavour brings out citrus notes, lots of tequila without being offensive, and tanginess. Finishes on notes of tequila and citrus tang. Solid stuff, but I prefer the chardonnay barrel aged version.

(500mL bottle from brewery) Pours a deep brown with reddish highlights, dense creamy pale tan head and lots of effervescence in the glass. Aroma of Brett, dark plum/cherry, earthy wood and leather from the barrel, some brown sugar and malt sweetness comes through under the sour. Palate is less noticeably Brett than the nose. Rich, fruity, malty: cherry preserves, dark fruit, burnt sugar, red wine/port, chocolate, some wood. A bit more sour/tart Brett character, red wine, wood from the barrel all come through towards the finish, but still a fair bit of malt/toffee sweetness persisting as well. Fairly full bodied but not syrupy, soft creamy carb, a little booze. Flavours are pretty rich and concentrated, good integration of Brett and barrel with the quad characteristics so neither really overpowers the other. Very nice sipper and a good cellar candidate.

(On tap at the brewery, April 17 2014) Pours a quite hazy pale orange with a small white head of fine bubbles, a little lacing. Aroma of candy sugar, a little pit fruit and orange peel, white bread, floral/spicy hop/yeast character. Flavour is cereal malts, faintly sweet but with very little candy sugar character, citrus, a bit herbal, light clove, low ester character. Lightly bitter throughout but finishes noticeably dry for a tripel, noble-type hops apparent in that finish, a bit peppery. Body medium, carb pretty soft, no booze noticeable. A crisp and refreshing take on a tripel, not mind-blowing but good, could use a sunny day.

6% Berliner Weisse. A blonde Weisse with a very thin white head. In aroma, sweet tropical fruits salad, tequila alcohol, a bit cloying. In mouth, a puckering sour ale with loads of lactic acid, tropical fruits, very nice. Bottle tasted at Spinrsx tasting.

Lambda, lambda, lambda and omega mu. Anyone? No? Pours a very dark brown-red with a couple of fingers of fluffy brown-tan head. Smell that fruity, must brett sourness, there is sweetness there too. The taste is a mouth filling mix of caramel, sour grapes, raisins, a little booze. Wow great beer.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours a deep dark brown with a large beige head. Nose brings out loads of brett, red wine barrels, and dark fruits. Flavour is exactly the same, with brett, dark fruits and red wine barrels. Very complex, with the brett well-incorporated to the quad. Great stuff.

Kinda sad this one doesn’t have any brett, him and I are good friends. Ah well. It’s a bottle from the brewery. Pours a hazy blonde with a big head (which kinda reminds me of this girl...), white fluffy head a couple of fingers with some pretty active carbonation going on inside that there glass. I suspect it’s the cloud floating on top of this thing, but I’m not getting much smell off this, some bready malts, some Belgian yeast. Taste lighter, with some apricots, wheat, little sourness, kinda wishing that brett was in the mix. Overall a very drinkable beer, I would almost say this would be a good all-afternooner but at 7% you might be hard pressed to really session this fella.
