Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

Tasting at Bruce’s Pad. Thanks to Rocket Rudkin. Opaque dark brown beer, good tan head. Palate is softish and airy. Soft and lightly tangy dark malt, touch of dry cream. Strong coffee but well rounded. Mild cognac underneath. Light dry finish.

Bottle shared in London - thanks to the Colinator. Pours deep black-brown with a frothy, beige head. The aroma holds a lot of charred wood, baking cocoa, some earth. Medium to big sweet flavor with lots of oily chocolate, some nice burnt oak, scorched earth. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming to finish with lots more dark, bittersweet chocolate, burnt wood, bitter earth. Solid.

Bottle thanks to Colin. It pours darkest brown with a tiny tan head. The nose is rich, roasty, earth, cognac, cocoa, vanilla, toasted coconut and toffee. The taste is rich, oily, toast, deep roast, earth, coffee, mild acidity and toasted coconut with a dry, fairly short finish. Fullish body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Pretty nice stuff. Smells amazing.

Bottle from the brewery. Pours a deep slightly hazy orange with a generous off white head that hangs around for a while. Nose is citrus , mango and pine with some hint of bready malt. Slightly sweet start with some pepper leading into a nice level of bitterness with grapefruit dominant. Medium full body with lively carbonation. Excellent.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours a hazy dull yellow with a tiny head. Nose is very lemony tart, with lemon meringue and light Chardonnay barrels. Flavour brings out loads of tart lemons and dry Chardonnay. Very dry, lemony and puckeringly tart. Very light on the palate and not *too* tart. Excellent stuff.

Bottle from the brewery. Pours a deep hazy brown with a generous tan head that fades slowly. Nose is roasted malt and chocolate with a big helping of pine. Flavour is light sweet chocolate with some coffee but nicely bitter like a black IPA rather than a brown ale. Medium palate with average carbonation and long dry bitter finish. Enjoyed this.
