Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color ale with a large brown foamy head with good retention and some light lacing. Aroma of tart notes with some dry roasted notes that are also perceptible. Taste is a mix between some tart notes with some dry roasted malt notes with light funky and acidic undertones. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Interesting mix but I am not personally a big fan of those soured stout.

Tart taste with medium sweet malty base, grapes, citrus, oranges, yeast, spices, wood. Alcoholic bitterness in finish. Delicious beer, nice complemented potato pancakes.

500mL bottle, pours a deep dark brown with a small brown head. Aroma brings out sour fruits, brett, and oak. Flavour brings out tart fruits, brett, cocoa, and tart malts. Pretty interesting experiment. Finishes on sour dark cocoa notes. Decent stuff.

Bottle at RBWG 2014, thanks! Pours black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has strong dark grains with dark fruit, a bit of roast and a note of cognac. Flavor has a lot of sweet dark grains backed by roasted malts and a hint of cognac.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours jet black with a medium tan head. Aroma brings out cherries, wood, and cocoa. Flavour isn't as cherry-dominated, with notes of roasted malt, cherries, cocoa, and wood. Wonderfully complex, with the cherries and wood greatly accentuating the base beer. Awesome.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours a cloudy pale orangey yellow with a medium white head. Aroma brings out Belgian yeast, very light funk, and citrus. Flavour is quite complex, bringing out traditional farmhouse yeast notes, some brett funk, citrus zest, and even a bit of salt. Extremely refreshing, yeasty and well-balanced. A brett saison that can compete with the best of them. Wonderful.
