Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

(500mL bottle from brewery) Pours a murky med-dark brown with a big bubbly off-white head that lingers and leaves a bunch of lace. Aroma citrus, ripe fruit, a little grass/fresh pine, some slightly nutty/dark bread malt character, sweet. On the palate, sweet and hoppy at first, ripe fruit and citrus, caramel and lightly roasted malts. Drier in the middle, light toast, slight nuts, fresh evergreen, but those ripe fruity hops persist and take over again in the finish. Fruit makes the finish seem sweeter than it is, slightly bitter, slight roast but mostly leafy, fruity hops. Body is fairly light, carb soft. I wanted to like this more than I do, not bad but it just doesn’t quite come together for me. I like the hop-heavy approach but I think this is a bit in-between styles I like. Not quite an IPA, not quite a black IPA. Ergo good, not great.

Bottle: Poured a dark black color ale with a very generous brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt with subtle coffee notes. Taste is also dominated by roasted notes with some light subtle dry coffee notes. Body is light with carbonation really too strong for the style. Enjoyable session-style stout but carbonation is almost like a Coke and doesn’t really fit the style.

Flavor is not as full though; orangey, soapy, airy, light, small bitter finish. Flavor doesn't have depth and body is too light

Bottle: Poured an amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention with some good lacing. Aroma of earthy hops with light citrus notes is quite interesting. Taste is a solid mix of citrus and earthy hops with some light dry caramel malt. Body is fuller than expected with good carbonation. Hoppier and tastier than I had expected for a low ABV session-style beer. I wish this was accessible to me.

Bottle: Poured a deep orangey color ale with a huge foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of citrus and bitter hops with subtle fruity notes. Taste is also dominated by bitter hoppy notes with some citrus notes with light fruity undertones with a lightly sweet malt backbone. Body is somewhat full with good carbonation. Enjoyable but the Belgian yeast didn’t come out a much as I was expecting.

(Bottle from brewery, 1 day post-bottling) Pours a lightly hazed medium-gold with a tiny white head, maybe a bit darker than other Monogamies but maybe I’m crazy. Aroma hop-forward as expected, mango, kind of catty, west coast rainforest, berry mix, slight lemony citrus. Flavour also hop-forward, again some mango and a little lemon at first, catty, slightly sweet pale malt. A bit earthy from the middle on, a little pine foliage, orange pith, blueberry/blackberry, dank and pungent all the way through to the finish, fairly moderate bitterness for all the aroma/flavour hops. None of the Monogamy graininess shows up, this is all hop all of the time. Surprising how long that berry flavour lingers around. Body light-moderate and slick, carb a bit higher than my taste. A really good hop showcase and a superb APA. The nature of Mosaic might turn some off, be it the earth or the berries, but damn...works for me.

500mL bottle, sent from wilco (thanks a lot, Mike), pours a clear copper with a small white head. Nose brings out dull wheat notes above all, not really getting any brett here. Flavour brings out some lemony notes, along with very, very subtle funk (from the brett no doubt), and restrained wheat. It's got kind of a grainy lager quality - at least more so than a brett beer as expected. Drinkable and pleasant enough, but, as "blankboy" pointed out, this doesn't strike me at all as a brett white APA. Decent stuff, but seems a bit confused.

Bottle - Vinous, grassy and bret funk. Clear copper with a nice beige head. Bitter and sour bret, caramel, orange, boozy and a sour caramel finish. This doesn’t work for me, may need some more time in the bottle.
