Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

Bottle shared at my 5K tasting at Bruce’s pad, from an IP trade with my man from Toronto, 13/11/13. Hazed golden orange with a good sized off white head. Nose is earthy hops, grassy, bitter citric tones, dank pine, grapefruit. Taste comprises mandarin, earthy, orange pith, bitter grapefruit, light pine bite. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry grassy finale with semi aggressive hop bitterness. Very drinkable IPA with dank undertones.

Bottle - Dark roast malts, dark fruit and some bitter chocolate. Jet black with a creamy brown head that disperses quickly. Dark roast, chocolate, coffee and some dark fruit. There is a nice bitterness that cuts through to the finish. A really nice complex RIS.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s in London - cheers, Colin! Pours mostly clear, bright gold with a creamy white head. The nose has a bit of dank hops, pee, sweat, grapefruit. Light to medium sweet flavor, modest pithy citrus, melon, grapefruit, mild pine needles. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly resinous to finish, citrus pith, grapefruit, lemon. Great stuff. Wonderful balance.

Sample at the Beers from the Bikes Villes tasting on 11/08/2013. Hazy orange-amber pour with a medium off-white head that diminishes gradually. Short strings of lacing on the glass. The aroma is hoppy with citrus and malt notes. Medium to full body with flavors of pithy grapefruit, dank hops and malt. The finish is resiny hops up front with a grainy malt aftertaste. Fell short in my opinion.

Draft - Light citrus and yeast. Clearish gold with a rich head. Citrus, yeast, herbs and a spicy bitter finish. Long finish and a sticky mouthfeel. Not enough balance for my taste in an IIPA.

Draft - Surprise, it’s cat pee and grass. Clear gold with a thin head. Lemon zest, grass and leafy hops. Bitterness comes in during the finish, but subdued. Pleasant and bright.

Draft - Leafy hops and pine. Cloudy gold with a thin head. Tastes just like it smells. Very clean and a great showcase to the hop.

Draft - Big pine nose and some toasted malts. Deep clear brown with a light brown head. Piney hop bomb with a tiny bit of roast but not much. Way off balance, just a brown IPA. Style is way off bit still enjoyable.

Draft - Nitro - Roast malts and coffee. Jet black and that nitro cream head. Roast malts, little bit of dark fruit and coffee. Light and rich at the same time. On nitro this is great, likely thin otherwise.

(500ml from bottle shop, 2 days old) Pours clear pale orange, small white head, no lace. Aroma very pungent and a little dank/catty with orange zest, peach/pit fruit, bit of mango, resiny. Flavour of oranges, a melange of other fruit, resinous - some sweetness in the malt but just enough to support those dank fruity hops. Nice pungency to the middle of the palate, finishes dry, with a decent helping of resiny, slightly peppery bitterness that clings to the tongue. Body medium but silky smooth with fairly low carb. Very flavourful but extremely drinkable IPA, love the Summit/Simcoe combo here. Prefer this to Roman Candle, nice backup plan!
