Description
Bellwoods Brewery began as a small brewpub in the west end of Toronto in 2012, and underwent a couple modest growth spurts over the years to encompass two retail shops (selling fresh cans and bottles), and a production brewery in North York (mostly to house The Foeder Pyramid). These days, we produce about 18,000hL a year, which is a mere blip in the grand scheme of Ontario beer, but keeps us pretty busy. The styles we’re interested in brewing range greatly, and we always remain open to new ways of making beer. For the most part, our current efforts are devoted to aromatic hoppy stuff, crisp lagers, barrel aged wild blends, fruit-forward zingers, and the occasional barrel aged stout. There’s always a new, creative project waiting in the wings. We’re still a relatively small, collaborative team, forever dedicated to the pursuit of perfect beer–thanks so much for partaking in the fruits of our labour.

A hazed golden ale with a thin white head. In aroma, a rather nice and sweet mix of lemonade and musty Brett, honey, quite nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity malt with citrus pulp, honey, Brett, clover field, quite nice but the Brett doesn’t come out that much. Cask Days 2013.

Bottle - Dark roast malts, oak and some sour berry. Jet black with thin brown head. First sour stout I have ever liked. Dark roast, berry, barrel and sourness. Brilliant.

500mL bottle, pours black with a small brown head. Aroma brings out acidic fruit, roasted malt, and oak - very complex and nice mix of sour and stout qualities. Flavour brings out loads of oak barrels, moderate tartness, slight acidic fruit qualities and a little residual roast from the malt. This combines sour and stout extremely well. Quite complex, with the oak and tartness front and centre. Nothing is overbearing, but it all meshes well. Great stuff.

Bottle: Poured a pale yellow color ale with a large pure white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light coriander and wheat malt is refreshing. Taste is a mix between light coriander with some wheat malt and light cereal notes with a spicy finish. Body is light with aggressive carbonation that is not fitting for the style. Enjoyable though carbonation is too aggressive in my opinion.

Deep amber golden color. Amazing lactic nose with oak, vanilla, creamy, moderately sour. Some marmalade pops its nose out. Amazing nose. Wow. Hoppier mouth than expected, not so intense, oak, creamy, tons of malt, soo well balanced. Has to be Chardonnay barrels. Oak shines. Drinks amazingly light for 10%. Superb.

Bottle. Vanilla and cream, fruity, caramel, sweetened condensed milk in the nose. Apple, oak, wine. More plums in the mouth, oak, vanilla, light sourness, more tart than sour. Great fruit, great lactic flavor, yogurt, white wine with oak. Very nice and elegant.

Almost clear amber beer with a small white head. Palate is slightly viscous with fine carbonation. Sweet malt. Touch of something spicy - maybe cinnamon. Sweet generic fruits. Little aniseed and drying alcohol. Trace of sweet apples and pears esters. Quite a dry finish. A curious beer but not unpleasant. Light spicy aftertaste.

(Draught at the brewpub, Sept 28 2013) Pours a cloudy orange-tinged gold with a loose white head, dissipated quickly, no lace. Aroma hop-forward, candied lemon peel, orange, slight wheat note. No real sour/funky Brett character on the nose, maybe contributing some of the fruit though. Flavour follows the nose at first, citrus hops, lemon rind, slightly funky/fruity Brett character, wheat malt, moderate leafy hop bitterness from mid-palate to finish, slightly grainy. Lightish body, average carb. Definitely a hoppy wheat with a bit of Brett rather than vice versa, but good. The tap sample I had at Bar Hop the week before seemed less hoppy, more sweaty Brett funk from the middle of the palate on. Interested to see how the bottles I have pan out.
