330 ml bottle. Dark red-brown with nice thick creamy head. Warm malty flavour with a hint of sherry and alcohol. A smooth and warming beer. Just a litter disappointing aftertaste, would have expect this to last longer. Hides the 9% alcohol very well.

Aged 8 months, best by May 2008. Consumed to celebrate 1/2 way through lawschool. This is an excellent beer with complexity that is rarely matched. The aroma is dried fruit, soy sauce, and alcohol. It smells like an imperial stout. Very dark brown with small pieces of sediment sitting on the bottom of the glass. There is a very thin heading sitting evenly on the top of the beer. Very complex flavor. Medium-sweet malt, then followed by chalk. Next comes more dried fruit, light apple, and dry merlot. Dry after taste with more chalk and light fruit. Very heavy palate. An excellent beer in every way, but the huge price means this will remain a very rare treat.

Bottle shared with Hunsell at Café Bar Le Duc, ’s Hertogenbosch. Red amber ale with a very sweet caramel aroma, good hops and cherry notes. Rather sweet malt with notes of brown sugar, prunes and raisins. Woody notes appers. Nice light hops but short bitterness. Medium bodied.

0.33l bottle @ Tolkien’s House, Zagreb, odd broad La Trappe glassPoured a very dark brown and murky body with a small creamy tanish head that went away fast. Lovely aroma: plums, figs, raisins, random fruit, liquorice, malt, some acidity. The taste isn’t worse. It started with distinct roastiness which was intertwined with a lovely banana taste. Gum candy could be felt, and dark malts, and some berry coated in brown sugar, even some lemon could be felt in the last few sips. EVen this lovely herbal yet fruity taste I identified in Orval as aloe vera is there. Alcohol is well hidden, and what little could be felt actually improved the taste. The aftertaste consisted of some odd roasty yet sweet caramel that stuck to introduce the hoppy bitterness which was rather incospicuous. Lovely stuff.

3rd attempt with this beer and I still struggle with it. Pours a muddy brown colour. Aroma is strong with over boiled peas, sweet fruits like figs. Flavour is sweet with figgy dried fruits. Lacking in depth and overall a touch too sweet. Initially the carbonation is too strong. It needs to sit for 10 minutes before drinking.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, with off-white head. Notes of dried fruits (raisins/figs), chocolate, and traces of alcohol, in the nose. Wonderful!

Cloudy coppery brown with a large rocky tan head that settled in a few minutes. Bread and fruit aromas with some subtle spice notes. Flavor of fruit esters on top of a caramel malt base. A bit of a wine like flavor with the alcohol just barely coming through. A sense of licorice can be found too.
