Description
Founder and head brewer Michael loves to spend most of his free time in the mountains and as a keen mountaineer and fell runner he has visited most of Britain's walking and climbing regions. In the past he has also climbed some of the highest mountains in the alps, as well as frozen waterfalls, abseiled down seacliffs in Cornwall (only to climb back up again...), climbed the crags of the Peak District, walked and scrambled extensively in Snowdonia and the Lake District. Closer to home he has battled the Scottish winter (and sometimes the 'summer') to both walk and climb. Some of his more exotic climbing destinations have included rock climbing on the arctic Lofoten islands of Norway and trekking in Kyrgystan. Following a move to Edinburgh, Michael founded Top Out in 2013 with his friend Moo and bringing his passion for climbing to our beers as well.

Cask at Six Degrees North. It pours clear golden with a medium, bubbly white head. The nose is doughy, orange sponge cake, pine, appletizer and white grape. The taste is crisp, bitter, pine, orange peel, varnish, pine needles and a touch of soap. Light body and soft carbonation. Nose is rather nice, but a touch water if truth be told. Crushable enough though.

Opaque golden wheat beer with little head a slightly sour apricot aroma. The flavour is quite fruity too but pleasingly crisp so it’s not overwhelmingly sweet. The disappointing thing is that there isn’t that much depth the flavour and the aftertaste is slightly watery but it’s still a rather enjoyable beer.

Leighton 10K tasting at Bruce’s pad. Salute to Paul. Hazy gold beer, very small pale cream coloured head. Palate is light, dry and a little crisp. Airy malt, light and fluffy and mildly sweet. Dry citric hops, strong bitterness ramping up. Finishes crisp and semi dry. Bitter bastard.

500ml bottle. Hazy brass colour with average, frothy, diminishing, white head. Minimally sourish vinegar aroma, a touch of mustard and apple, herbal hints of laurel and juniper, some banana in the background. Taste is minimally tart, slightly wheaty, fruity, hints of apple. I’d like more wheat and fruit. Needs improvement and maybe repeated consultation of the ’Bavarian Style Wheat Beer’-paradigm. Relaunch as "Top Out Titbit: The ’Schmankerl’ revisited".

Bottle shared in London - many thanks to Paul. Pours mostly clear, rich gold with a frothy, off-white head. Juicy hops in the nose, melon, pine, grapefruit, pale bread. Light sweet flavor with aggressive, sticky bitterness, earth, heavy citrus rind. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Resinous finish, well and bitter, with lots of grass, rind, pine, minerals. Lacks balance but not hops.

Bottle shared at Bruce’s. It pours hazy amber with a small white head. The nose is fresh, piney, grapefruit, stewed orange, Irn Bru, sweat and underlying sweetness. The taste is smooth, bitter, orange peel, grapefruit, light dough, peppery, wood and leather with a lingering pretty bitter finish. Medium body and moderate, prickly carbonation. Pretty bitter stuff. Smells great. Nice work.
