Irish porter aged on Irish whiskey (hence the ‘e’) barrels, from a stubby, classy bottle shared by Craftmember, cheers! Yellowish ecru-coloured, moussy, medium thick, closed and dense, stable head, very dark chocolate brown robe – virtually black, with ruby red glowing edges. Aroma of clear vanilla-scenting oak wood, coffee grounds and cold black coffee, bitter black chocolate, roasted walnut, black peppercorns, dried fig, nutmeg, pecan, toast, hints of wormwood leaf, porcini and cracked leather. Dried-fruity onset, dried blackberries and figs, hint of prune, sweetish with light porcini-like umami note at the sides, softishly carbonated with smooth, lean, oily mouthfeel; toasted brown-bready, unsugared-black-chocolatey and roasted-walnutty malts with slight caramelly touch, quickly moving from sweetish-nutty to full-fledged roasted bitter, with coffee-like aspects in the end – the roasty bitterness in itself quite strongly enhanced by wormwood, peppery hop bitterness and drying tannic woodiness. Still the smoothness of the malts prevails, adorned by a light, soft and in that sense indeed ‘Irish’ whiskey note in the end – yet without annoying booze effects, so only a whiskey flavour and no alcohol burn at all (which would have been weird at this ABV anyway). Another solid, old school offering from Brehon, delving into its own Irish beer history in a very credible, elegant and balanced way. Recommended, if, within the stout and porter realm, you need a contemplative and ‘quiet’ distraction from all those showy, flavoured imperial stouts many craft breweries try to outdo each other…

silky mouthfeel, black coffee, chocolate a bit liquorice with a dry slightly bitter finish, easy to drink, nice.

500ml bottle purchased as part of a delivery from KWM, Kilkeel, some time ago. Dark brown and translucent with a large khaki head. Chocolate fudge, peat and mint in the aroma which is light than I'd expected fora beer of this magnitude. Taste is sweet, more chocolate, molasses, pretzel and yeast extract with a gritty medicinal bitterness in the finish. Heavy carbonation hides the watery body. It's a bit strange but overall an enjoyable beer.

Keg at northern lights. Pours clear amber, nose is musty toffee, herbs, taste is pine, sweet toffee.

--Cask at The Silver Penny (JDW), Dublin. -- Clear mahogany colour. Caramelly, somewhat peaty nose. Mid sweet with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Caramel, toast and mild peat. Mid bitter finish.

Tap at FOB, Rimini, Italy. Pours pretty dark red/brown, with nice reflections and very fine smooth cream foam. Aroma is fruity and cherry, though kinda weak. Body and carbonation are average. Taste is both sweet (malty and cherry) and bitter (earthy and herbaceous). Final is average.

Very surprised to find this on the in-flight menu with Jet2. Bought a 330ml can and drank it on 5th October 2022, BBD being 6th April 2024. Sat on my studio balcony in Nidri and drinking a new Irish beer, brilliant. Pours black, good deeply tanned head. Chocolate and coffee esters and flavours with a decent oatmeal base.
