Great Beer Above All Else
Surly: The frustration we felt when we couldn't find a good beer, much less a great one, in Minnesota. So we made some.
Great beer is all that really matters. Well, that and pushing your limits a bit, looking out for your people, taking pride in where you’re from, and having as much damn fun as you can while doing it.

750ml bottle pours a hazy, copper brown with some cloudy white head. Nose of cherries, wood, strawberry, some rose petal, a little smoke, musty yeast. Flavor is tart, cherry, raspberry, light wood, some vinegar, caramel, strawberry jam, rose water, a little Pinot grape. Medium bodied, dry finish. Very well balanced.

Pours a dark reddish-brown, almost black. Little to no head. Strong aroma of fruity and wine. Flavor was a nice, sour combination of cherry and raisin. Rather high alcohol content that sort of sneaks up on you.

Vampire 2010 Good dark amberish, rust-coloured head, fast gone over jet-black beer. Faintly leafy-bitterish (like acorns, actually), and quite roasted, deliciously moccha, with a surprising hint at sorrel. Seems neutral at first, then bitterish, roasted, coffeeish, sweetish, alcoholic and even hoppy. Fusels & esters galore. Another superbly balanced beer: nothing clashing, all in harmony and layered. Rich doesn’t convey the depth. This is beyond comparison. I sometimes tend to dislike beers because of the hype surrounding them. I must confess this one deserves all praise heaped on it.

Bottle from a trade with StoutFest. Pours black with brown head. Aromas of espresso, chocolate and roasted malts. Flavors of roasted malts, espresso and sweet milk chocolate. Medum to full body with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. Excellent! Thanks Ramiro.

Thanks to Armin for sharing - lightly hazy gold - nose is very fresh hoppiness - grass, pepper, pine, grapefruit pith - there is an add note of celery in the nose that is a little off-putting - fairly dry for the abv - grassy, piney, peppery - sturdy malt base to support the intense bitterness - despite the slight flaw in the nose, nice stuff.

12 oz. can thanks to Tripplebrew. Used an English pint. Brown color with red highlights around the edges. Luscious dark roasted coffee bean nose noticeable as I cracked the can and pored. OOOH, nice! Taste is notes of chocolate, mocha but most of all deep, rich coffee. And if this was a blind taste test, I’m not sure I would even know brown ale was in front of me. Smooth almost silk like mouthfeel. Much like a good, weak coffee. I got to hand it to the brewers at Surly, they make great beer. If you like coffee brews, this is top notch! Can we really call this beer???

Can shared by Ari, thanks! Pours a clear deep amber with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a ton of hops with notes of pine, onion, and a bit of grapefruit backed by sweet grains. Flavor begins with sweet grains but quickly becomes hoppy with onions, pine and sweet grapefruit in the finish.

Pours a nice, coppery-orange color with small, quickly dissipating head. Strong floral-citrus aromas. Flavor is quite bitter with strong citrus notes and a real hop bite. Finish is quite bitter. This is a very good double IPA--not the best I’ve tried, but right up there.
