Description
Leroy Het Sas : The original brewery "Het Sas", later Brouwerij Leroy, established in Boezinge in 1572; destroyed in the First World War and rebuilt in 1924. Named after a lock ('sas' in Dutch) in the nearby canal. Cooperating with Van Eecke (Leroy Breweries Watou) since 1962. Both breweries merged into Leroy Breweries in 2016.

Leroy Watou : Established as a castle brewery for the count of Watou in 1624 and also known formerly as Brouwerij De Gouden Leeuw. Has long been connected to Leroy in Boezinge through family ties, with both breweries cooperating since 1962. They merged into Leroy Breweries in 2016; the Watou branch now does all the actual brewing (while Boezinge handles conditioning and bottling).

From the website:

Draught at ZBF08. Pale yellow colour. Nice stable creamy white head. The flavour has a little plastic at first. Turns a little better. A little spicy. Mediocre.

ZBF2008: From tap. Pours clear light brown with a dense white head. Light spiced and malty aroma. Flavour is hoppy and spiced, rather dry. Goes into a dry and light spiced finish.

A tad gassy but is a full flavoured beer. Thick and sweet at first with a dryer bitter finish.

Pale, clear yellow colour and thin white head. Plain, bland flavour, a little drying on the tongue. Slightly sour aftertaste.

Thick-set, creamy & cream-coloured head, irregular and leaving lace over hazy dark-orange beer. White candi sugar, quite citrussy with a point of sourness suggested, and some alcohol. Dried citrus leaves. Dry-bitter beer, with a leafy character, and almost imperceptible sour tang. Some sweetness on the palate, but faint. Again citrus flavours. Alcohol comes out in the palate, which is pretty dry. Medium to well-bodied, despite all the sugar-derived alcohol. Nice beer, the nearly bitter dryness conforts me in the tale I’ve been spun, that this is a differently sweetened exportversion from the Kapittel Blond.

On tap at ZBF 08. Clear gold, with thin beige head. Belgian yeasty aroma. Reasonably characterful. Better than the standard of this style.

On tap at ZBF 08. Clear gold, pretty good lager, with more hop on end than I would expect. Some nasty lager malt, but overall a solid lager and it surprised those people I gave a taster of it to.

At ZBF 2008, Sint-Niklaas, Belgium
Blond, hazy body. Off-white creamy/rocky head. Quite weak, hoppy aroma of flowers. Heavily bitte, lightly sweet flavour. Quite 1 dimensional on the bitterness. Could be better. Not too well balanced.
