Description
Leroy Het Sas : The original brewery "Het Sas", later Brouwerij Leroy, established in Boezinge in 1572; destroyed in the First World War and rebuilt in 1924. Named after a lock ('sas' in Dutch) in the nearby canal. Cooperating with Van Eecke (Leroy Breweries Watou) since 1962. Both breweries merged into Leroy Breweries in 2016.

Leroy Watou : Established as a castle brewery for the count of Watou in 1624 and also known formerly as Brouwerij De Gouden Leeuw. Has long been connected to Leroy in Boezinge through family ties, with both breweries cooperating since 1962. They merged into Leroy Breweries in 2016; the Watou branch now does all the actual brewing (while Boezinge handles conditioning and bottling).

From the website:

(Draught)Clear gold, dense, broken-white head. Crisp, slightly corn-sweet smell, touch of coloured malt. Nice bitter onslaught in the taste, but quickly gone - then the malt fills in without becoming sweet. I get some roasted notes. Medium-bodied. It's the finish of the palate where it derails. Sharp metallic-bitter aftertaste, like burnt unripe peanuts - typically Leroy. Even adstringent. Damn this finish. I ruins a potentially good beer.

Nice fruity nose with honey, grapes, a touch of pineapple and abundant esters mingling with wet hay. The body is cloudy yellow-orange with a dense, puffy light tan head. Flavor is of dry bread, cereal and flowers with a nice sweet touch, but I concur with PsychProf on the copper aftertaste; my mouth feels like I've been sucking on a penny. Otherwise this is highly drinkable and a fairly unique interpretation.

Cloudy orange with a lasting bubbly white head. Crisp, fruity aroma, some apple, some lemon. Initial round malt/hops flavour followed by a long and bitter hops aftertaste. (re-rate needed to fit with the numbers I use today)

Bottle - Poured a deep murky amber brew with a nice huge foamy white head that's long lasting. ABV is bit too omnipresent but excellent carbonation. Taste is sweet with some quite complex mix of spice. I notice that some of the other review mentioned a metallic taste, which I have heard of before. If I recall well, the metallic taste is from the hops and usually goes away after the bottle is aged a bit.

(Brewed under the name and the recipe(???) of the former Bevernagie brewery at Lichtervelde) Dull straw-gold; slim white rim for head. Just grainy nose, not much else, but a few fruity esters. Very dull-sweet taste, quite grainy again - but with a very authentic-tasting lactic retronasal aroma. Medium bodied, some tartness in the finish. The taste is surprisingly authentic. I wouldn't have expected it from the Leroy-Van Eecke duo.

Light orange brew with a huge white head. Good carbonation with complex spicy aroma. Taste of hops is really present with good body. Taste of complex spice is really enjoyable. Overall, a really fine strong belgian brew.

Yellow hazy brew ith a nice head that disapeared a bit too quickly. Yeasty nose and incredible yeasty flavor as only the belgian brewer can do. Note of coriander and citrus. Great body for a witbier. Very impressive for this style.

Golden colour with a thin white head. Aroma of coriander seed, malt and some sugars. Medium-bodied; Sweet flavourful characters with some good complex peaches/pears and honey are noticed in the taste. Overall, a fairly good beer-definately nice to try! I had this bottle at the Winter Party at Oakes' place in Toronto, Canada on 05-December-2003. I owe a large amount of thanks to MartinT for supplying this bottle to the party for us to all sample!

2013-04-04, draught at Restobière, Brussels, 7-4-8-4-15=38
Golden color, bright, with generous compact head. The aroma is mildly fruity, and with some vegetables, but nice. The mouthfeel is round and smooth; it has a nice flavor of malt with a touch of cereals and of spices; the moderate sweetness, balances perfectly this beer; correct bitterness.
Very fresh.

Cloudy deep blond color; big head. Good aroma of malt and sugar, lightly fruity. It has a medium body, with a too light malt flavor; it has a very strong bitterness, but the hop qualities are hidden by a too strong yeast presence. Not as good and stylish as I remembered.

Golden to orange color. Very nice malt and hop aroma. Dry flavor, a lot spicy (coriander), malty and hoppy, with a final just more bitter than the average.
