Bärnstensfärgad vätska med högt och tjockt skum. Fruktig och lite kakigt degig arom. Och så klart jäst och ört. En ordentlig maltkropp med fruktig smak. Örter och jäst står lite tillbaka. Stram och rejäl beska matchar det hela. Tillsammans komponeras ett belgiskt storverk. Ordentligt fyllig och rejält eldig munkänsla utan tramsiga överdrifter. Kort sagt en av de bättre i denna stil.

Large foamy light brown head stayed on a rich dark brown still body. Malt, chocolate & spiced aroma. Medium bodied, soft on the palate with dry clean back. Malt, berries, caramel & fried raisin tastes with lightly hopped finish. Nice.

This year’s special edition of this legendary beer with freshly harvested hops – and freshly revised label apparently. Opens with a lot of ‘smoke’ coming from the bottle, but no gushing, in stark contrast with last year’s edition… Cobweb-lacing, snow white, irregular, thick and frothy head on an initially near-clear, warm and pure golden blonde beer with ochre-ish tinge and lots of swirls of sparkling, misty with sediment. Aroma of fresh camomile, sugar loaf, flax, sweetclover, apple slices turning brown, dry hay, lightly toasted pine nuts, soap, subtler hints of blossoming lilacs, bitter green garden weeds, raw button mushrooms, mint leaf, clove, green olive. Crisp, fruity-estery onset, halfripe banana, apricot and green apple, only restrainedly sweet, very fizzy carbonation (minerally in flavour and filling the mouth with ‘foam’ initially, but not in an overly harsh way); supple, bread-crusty and cereally, white-bready core, long grassy and spicy hop bitterness in the finish, hinting at dandelion, thistles and field flowers but also at grapefruit peel and tonic water. Lingering bready and spicy-phenolic elements bring us back to the thoroughly Belgian nature of this beer, albeit with a modern twist. A ‘Belgian IPA’ in effect, this beer does manage to focus on the hops in an elegant, noble and natural way; feels just a pinch more ‘exotic’ than its predecessors, in a way. I like this kind of beer, if well done, and that certainly is the case here.

Bottle.Golden colour with large white head who stays.Aroma is sweet malty with light body aroma of hops and straw light body and mild finish.

L'édition 2020 ne restera pas comme la plus aboutie avec une amertume trop agressive et un ensemble manquant d'équilibre. L'effervescence trop poussée la rend de surcroît brouillonne. En verre, si le blond doré limpide et parcouru pas de vives fines bulles est sympathique, la mousse blanc cassé est quant à elle trop généreuse. Le nez laisse entrevoir des arômes de pomme, cidre et fines épices sir un houblon rafraîchissant. On perd très nettement ces arômes de pomme et cidre à ma dégustation avec une amertume prédominante sur le pamplemousse et quelque peu herbacée, ce, dès l'attaque. De légères épices et un miel en sous-jacent peuvent également être décelés. Si la deuxième bouche voit une amertume très vive, l'arrière bouche est brouillonne, perturbée par l'effervescence. Le final achève cependant cette dégustation par une note positive avec un équilibre enfin trouvé. Corpulence et longueurs sont pour leur part bonnes tout comme l'alcool à 7,5% efficace. Déçu donc par ce millésime 2020, qui cependant pourrait se bonifier en vieillissant.
