The Gessner private brewery looks back on almost 400 years of tradition and has been brewing the best beers in Sonneberg since 1622. The family business is now run by the 14th generation (currently Manuela and Bernd Schäfer), an experience that you can taste: The traditional expertise, together with crystal clear water from its own well, guarantees the best raw materials from the region and the highest Thuringian brewing art real quality beers. In 1997 a completely new brewery was built in Sonneberg, which is one of the most modern breweries in the industry. With a beverage output of 145,000 hl, we are today the largest private brewery in Thuringia.

Hoppy, herbal aroma and flavor with some apple fruitiness on the background. Medium bodied. Sharp hopbitter, almost vanilla finish. Well made hoppy pilsener.

Swing top bottle, bought @ Bierzwerg. dark brown color. Caramelly maltaroma. Malty sweet flavor with some roast, sugary notes and hints of caramel and butter. There’s just enough roast to compensate the sweetness.

Black colour with ruby reflexes, rocky head that disappears after a while. Initially aroma is overwhelming iron. After warming up roasted, nuts, a bit of alcohol. Light sweetness. Too high carbonation, empty mouthfeel. Would be bad even without this outrageous iron aroma.

"Gessner Alt Sumbarcher Dunkel", Flasche von Getränkeland, Werneuchen. - Dunkles Kastanienrotbraun, klar. - In der Nase sehr mildes dunkles Malz, leicht limonadige Süße, schwache Anklänge an Schokolade. - Antrunk mild dunkelmalzig, limonadig süßsäuerlich. Äußerst schwacher, zart krautiger Hopfen. Milder rezent, eher dünn. Im Abgang ein klein wenig Malzbittere und eine matte Andeutung von Hopfenherbe. - Schwaches, flach malziges Dunkles ohne Tiefgang. Belanglos.

9th Aug 2018, on-tap 0.5 litre glass, at a random Schnell Imbiss in Quedlinburg sat in the afternoon sunshine. Golden pour, fast fading white topping. The nose had a malty front with a light floral note or two, taste also malty/grainy with a little grass/floral twist from the hops that also gave a balanced bitterness. OK for a cheap Pilsner.
