Rating #900.
Well, Stephen (tiggmtl) sent me this bottle in a trade and I figured it would make a good beer for #900! Deep brown/black body with a medium burnt ochre head. Big roasty nose with notes of molasses and mocha, also revealing hints of smoke. Flavor starts bitter and toasty, quickly subsiding to strong roasted malts and coffee. Yes, there is a smoked character to this beer. Rather dry for an Imperial Stout. A bit leathery/salty. I’m not sure this is an Imperial Stout, but it is a great beer.

Bottled. Hazy copper colour, creamy head. Hay aroma. Sweet notes of caramel and clean crystal malt character. Intensely hoppy - very flowery. Clean crystal malt character. A hint of licorice in a very bitter finish.

Bottled (2004 vintage) Very black. Arome of tarry coffee and licorice. Medium bodied with rounded mouthfeel, faitrly sweet. Chocoalte and light smokiness. Not very firm.
Bottled (2003 vintage tasted in Nov 2004) Very black. Tarry lemon aroma with some coffee. Roasty and suprosingly light bodied with somewhat fizzy mouthfeel. Licorice and coffee is there, as is some smoke. Has not gained from aging, and is probably starting to go downhill. (5/4/6/3/11/2.9)

Deep brown body with red highlights, thin tan head. Strong smokehouse aroma with a touch of chocolate. Roasted malts and dry chocolate barely peek through the intense smoked flavor. Slight tartness in the finish. This hit the spot. Thanks Stephen (tiggmtl) for the bottle!

Deep copper-red body, thin cream clumping head. Very caramely aroma with light notes of earthy hops. The flavor is likewise slanted towards the malts, with caramel, brown sugar, and hints of light fruit balancing the earthy hops. Increasingly bitter finish as the beer is quaffed. Towards the end of the glass notes of tobacco leaf develop. More or less a low ABV American Strong Ale, along the line of Bear Republic’s Red Rocket Ale. Thanks Stephen (tiggmtl) for the bottle!

Pours oily black, appears still except for the thin layer of head. Strong roast, bit of espresso, acrid black malt. Popcorn? Strong roast in flavor, oily mouthfeel. Bitterness in the throat. Palate is thick but on the lighter side of imperials at 7%. Acrid flavors linger.

Opaque dark brown, medium fading tannish head. Rich aroma: astringent and husky, smoky/ashy, oaky, roasted. Smoke is less apparent in the initial flavor, instead a rounded husky roasted malt sits big up front. Surprisingly light body, and light acrid ashy finish. Smoke lingers long on the palate. A smoked baltic porter?

Darkish amber-copper color, reddish tones, nice. Nicely balanced and complex aroma, earthy malts and plenty of hops: piney, cannabis, tobacco, maybe some grapefruit. Surprisingly malty and rounded palate, balanced finish with a resounding smack of bitterness lingering in the throat. Somewhat mineral content as well.

Lightish gold color with nice full lacy head. Classic pilsner aroma, redolent of aromatic spicy grassy hops with a hint of tomato vines. Flavor is briskly hoppy above a thin layer of malt. Finish is more balanced than expected, malt carries through until the end. Still, a firm bitter background is omnipresent. Less crisp than a classic Bohemian pilsner but still rather good stuff.
