Description
The last brewery in Hoegaarden, Tomsin, closed shop in 1957. Soon after, in 1965, the villagers decided to take action to preserve the original recipe. Milkman Pierre Celis decided to grasp the nettle and started brewing up a batch in his milk shed, using only a copper boiler. Because of the great success he quickly expanded his operation and moved into a bigger building – ‘De Kluis’ (The Vault) – a subtle nod to the monks. By 1985 the nod was no longer subtle as he was making more than 75.000 hectolitres per year. Just as he was about to start exporting to the United States, a large fire shattered his dreams (and the beer). The brewery was destroyed.

Since 1985, the brand has been part of Artois brewery, which provided fresh capital, after the fire. After the takeover, the recipe was changed to appeal to a wider audience and save on raw materials. The Artois brewery, which had already been absorbed into InBev (nowadays Aneuser-Busch InBev) for some time, decided in 2006 to close the brewery and move production to Jupille. On September 10, 2007, it was announced that Hoegaarden would once again be brewed in Hoegaarden. The brewery in Jupille didn't manage to imitate the typical taste of Hoegaarden...

Can. Hazy yellow pour, with a large white head. Aroma is all there, soft wheat, coriander, light citrus, pleasantly surprised. Mouth feel is full, carb is soft. What ruins this is this odd sweetness.... Can't shake it, it dominates, and really ruins the beer. Otherwise, it wasn't half bad.

Bottle at le mondiale 2011.
Holy god this was awful! Just a kick in the face. Nothing but overly sweet aspertame artificial lemon, just nasty! Sickly cloying aspertame finish, just gross.

hazy light brown with a huge beige had. Nice aroma of caramel, dark ripe fruit, and some alcohol. Flavour is rich, and satisfying. Some great caramel flavors mixed with some more fruit. A great beer.

First thing that impresses is the generous head on pouring. Touches of banana, lemon and a little orange peel. Nice balance in the aroma. Very prominent carbo. Definitely one of the better Witbieren.

Pours a deep ruby/amber with a frothy off-white head. Fruity aroma of spices, banana, Belgian yeast. Medium sweetness with good carbonation. Tasty.

Poured from 500mL can (bb 13/07/2025). Had this many times before, especially pre-Ratebeer, but never rated it apparently so here it goes. Chill hazed blonde gold with full white head. Mild Belgian yeast with coriander, creamy body, very feint citrus. Needs more flavour, but I like the mouthfeel. Okay for a classic macro.

Bottle at home. Aroma of grapefruit and Fanta Orange with a hint of wheat. Flavour is sugary sweetness. Body is light. Drinkable but has nothing to do with beer, very artificial.

Bottiglia.
