Description
Papworth Brewery is the inevitable outcome of a beer-loving scientist becoming disillusioned with his career. Chances are that you’re a beer lover too and can understand why someone would give up a successful 25 year career to brew beer. It’s got to be more interesting than most other jobs, right? Well, that’s the way our beer-loving scientist saw it. When “job satisfaction” is the taste of a good pint, who can argue?

Papworth Brewery was founded on an uncompromising philosophy, It’s All About The Beer, and an ambition to brew deliciously drinkable ales. The idea is that if we stick to the philosophy, then we’ll achieve the ambition.

Bottle from LCB, consumed 11 months past BBE!. Pours a murky reddish brown with two finger foamy beige head, lovely retention and lacing. Malty aroma - caramel, fruit cake, berries, honey. Taste is fairly sweet although not too rich with toffee malts, caramel, berries, dried fruit, light herbal hops. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, moderate bitterness. I don't think there was much dry hopping so the hop degradation is limited somewhat I think although don't know for sure!. Looking at earlier reviews I suspect this was always more of an English strong ale type beer and a good one at that. Tasty.

Panda from LCB. Cloudy gold with small white top, little retention. Aroma is yeasty with citric notes, soft white bread and spice. Taste of toasted grains, yeasty citric lemon and lime esters, floury bread, spice. Light bodied and yet chewy in the finish. It does have a refreshing quality on repeated sips and I also like the fact that a traditional brewery is trying to brew something a little different to the norm. Its not very tasty though sadly.

Cask at the Peterborough beer festival 2024. A clear amber orange coloured pour with a fading loose white head. Aroma is semi sweet, earthy grains, brown bread, light grass, pine, not much Sabro character. Palate is semi sweet, rounded, mellow cask condition. Disappointment for a Sabro action beer.

Bottle from Bury Lane Farm Shop, Royston. Hazy orange with a white head and a moderate fizz. Sweetish and really quite spicy from the off - there's peach, orange, a hint of banana, white bread and a lot of pepper. Slight sour and mildly bitter note in the finish seems like it shouldn't be there. Nice at first, but liked it less the more I drank.
