KeyKeg at the Townhouse 2017 Beer Festival, Ely. Cream yellow, murky. Tiny bit of white head. Sharp and spicy lemongrass on the aroma with a note of lemon curd. There’s a sweetness from the wheat despite the brash aroma, although the bitterness kicks in fairly quickly. Long finish with hard citrus to the fore. The heavy carbonation can’t quite hide the watery body, and the balance topples at the very end leaving a slight acrid flavour in the aftertaste, but other than this it’s a solid little beer.

Gravity cask at the Townhouse 2017 Beer Festival, Ely. Orange/yellow, cloudy and flat. Mango-laden aroma with notes of passionfruit and papaya. Light bittersweet taste, with no surprises, turning slightly sweeter toward the end of the sip. Long balanced finish. More mango in the aftertaste with a touch of lemon rind. It’s simple, perhaps overly so, but the more I drink the more I like. Recommended.

Gravity cask at the Drayman’s Son, Ely. Ruddy brown with a large off-white head. Lots of lacing left! Forest floor and overripe tangerine peel in the modest aroma. Fantastic fresh taste, with the chewy sweetness of the malt overridden by the bittering hop. Pure bitterness in the finish. Rooibois tea and horehound in the aftertaste. That’s how you make a bitter.
