Big Hand Brewing Co. (Wrexham)
Microbrewery

Associated Venue: Big Hand Alehouse

Established in 2013
Armed with nothing more than a redundancy cheque, a pair of Wellington boots and Google, Dave convinced his wife that starting a brewery was the correct course of action. Having found a piece of kit with suitable pedigree, Dave realised that he needed someone else to do the cleaning. So, the shortest telephone conversation in history was made: “Hi Andy. Do you want to give up teaching and brew beer?” – you can fill in the rest.
In the rather cold winter of 2012, Dave and Andy started the process of putting the brewery together. Dave’s background in construction and engineering proved invaluable, while Andy’s background in theology proved, well, useless. Still, he could hit things with a hammer so he was happy.
Officially born in March 2013, Big Hand Brewing has quickly established itself as a serious player in the North Wales craft brewing scene, racking up five SIBA Regional awards in three years. But as the brewery develops, and as new recipes are discussed and trialled, the underlying beliefs from the start remain the same....
1) Beer should make you smile.
2) Beer should be drinkable.
3) Beer should be drunk with friends.

On cask at Cloisters. Appearance - amber with a decent head. Nose - red fruit and oranges. Taste - more of the same. Light toffee too. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - a decent example of the style. But a bit of biscuit would help further

13th June 2015: cask half-pint in Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, Oakengates. Old gold in colour with a creamy head, the whole beer was smooth and slick in nature even if the body was slightly hazy. Fruity nose and taste, mild apple tones mid-sip with a finish that was dry and semi-bitter. Decent.

Hand-pulled half-pint in the Pheasant, Wellington Shropshire on 28th April 2015. Clear golden pour with a full and lasting white head. Refreshingly none citrus, fruity yes, but no lemon or grapefruit notes. Pleasant blend of flavours, semi-sweet with a drying finish.

Cask @ Ship & Mitre, Liverpool. Copper with a small creamy head. Bitter in character, but not particularly high in bitterness. It’s light sweet malts are dominant and it’s a very palatable ale for its style with a sugary nose.
