Description
Established as the Matthews Brewing Co in 2005 by Stuart Matthews and Sue Appleby in a farm workshop estate in the village of Timsbury, a few miles outside Bath. Using the best ingredients such as Maris Otter malt , this small 5 barrel brewery soon became known for its distinctive, uncompromising ales.
Taken over by Dawkins Taverns and name changed in January 2010. The Brewery moved from Timsbury near Bath to Bristol in 2016.
Closed May 1st 2023 due to cost of living crisis.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 5/05/10. Amber coloured with a decent white head. Aroma of caramel, grapefruit and marmalade. Flavour of sweet malts, tropical fruit and a touch of spice, leading to a dry, warming alcohol finish with the hops lingering on. Very good.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 10/03/10. Deep gold in colour with a slight, off-white head. Sweetish caramel and fruits on the aroma with some leafy hops. Easy drinking, with plenty of fruit, orange hops and a lingering, dry finish. Good.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 10/03/10. Dark, reddish-brown with a frothy, off-white head. Sweet, fruity with some toffee and a hint of roastiness leading to a bitter finish. Good.

Cask-conditioned at the Green Man, Bristol 11/12/09. Deep orange in colour with a slight, off-white head. Aroma of stem ginger, apricots and citrus hops. Flavour started with some sweet biscuit malts, before more citrus fruit, subtle ginger and a dry finish. Good.

Cask-conditioned at the Portcullis, Clifton, Bristol 18/08/09. Reddish amber with a slight, off-white head. Caramel and red fruit aroma with some spicy hops. Flavour started sweet and treacly, before some decent hoppy bitterness to balance the whole thing off. Very enjoyable.

Cask handpull at Market Porter, London, Bright gold, thin white head. Farty yeast aroma. Farty golden bitter. But I like that. Pretty good.

Cask-conditioned at the Seven Stars, Bristol 16/05/09. Deep amber in colour with a decent. off-white head. Big, leafy hop aroma with some balancing malt sweetness. Flavour had some caramel to start, with orange hoppiness and a decent bitter finish. Drinkable.

Cask@HBF2009. Clear amber color, small white head. Sweaty hoppy aroma. Chewy malty, nice woody hops, nice dry aftertaste. Good tasty real ale.

Cask@HBF2009. Amber colour, some off-white head. Aroma is sweet wood, fruits, and some mild yeasty notes as well. Flavour is wood, quite dry, nice dryness. Wellbalanced and drinkable.

Cask gravity at Planet Thanet BF 09. Very deep ruby colour with no real head. Yes, a half decent choccy porter with some dark fruits. Decent. Quite drinkable.
