Description
Established as the Matthews Brewing Co in 2005 by Stuart Matthews and Sue Appleby in a farm workshop estate in the village of Timsbury, a few miles outside Bath. Using the best ingredients such as Maris Otter malt , this small 5 barrel brewery soon became known for its distinctive, uncompromising ales.

Taken over by Dawkins Taverns and name changed in January 2010. The Brewery moved from Timsbury near Bath to Bristol in 2016.

Closed May 1st 2023 due to cost of living crisis.

Cask-conditioned, at the Seven Stars, Bristol 16/9/2019. Dark brown in colour, with a thin, off-white, head. Rich malts, some leafy hops, red berries and a smooth finish. Enjoyable.

Cask at GBBF: Poured a black with tan head. Aroma is sweet malts. Taste is light smoke malts very edgy. Very drinkable.

Cask at GBBF 2019, Olympia, London. A black coloured pour with a healthy beige head on top. Roasty, malty, dark chocolate aroma. Tastes roasty, malty, dark chocolate. Rich tasty stout.

ABV: 4.8%. Clear dark red brown colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, dark malt, sweet malt, wood - light smoked. Flavor is moderate sweet with a average to long duration, wood, tobacco, sweet malt, dark malt, roasted, light smoked feel. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft to flat. ABV: 6.2%. Murky matt medium orange colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly diminishing, white head. Aroma is moderate malty, pale malt, sweet malt, moderate hoppy, citrus, dusty. Flavor is moderate sweet and light bitter with a average duration, pale malt, sweet malt, dusty. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft to flat. [20190806]

GBBF Day 1. Cask. Light haze on this paleish gold beer, small white head. Smooth palate, modest fine carbonation. Soft malts, a little grainy sweetness. Soft pine. Lame citrus. Bored before at first sip.

Murky medium orange colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, pale malt,sweet malt, moderate hoppy, grapefruit, mango, sweet fruit, sweet hops. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a long duration, mango, grapefruit, sweet hops, pale malt. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery and smooth, carbonation is soft to flat. Cask-conditioned, on gravity, at the Drapers Arms, Bristol 19/4/2019. Golden in colour, with a thin, white, head. Tangerines and grapefruit, grassy hops, light rich tea malts and a dryish finish. Fine.
