Draught at Ginger Man Boston, 5/3/17.
Cloudy, slight rose-tinted, peach-golden body with a small, off-white head showing moderate retention.
Very real, authentic and well-developed fruit notes in the nose mix nicely with the lactic acid and neither dominate as a result. Strawberries aren’t used too often in brewing as they’re very light and not terribly assertive/distinctive, requiring quite a bit to achieve a healthy aroma/flavor, which then runs the risk of over-sweetening the beer. Here it’s both balanced and aromatic without any excess sugar or obnoxious kettle-sour-like qualities (like sniffing a glass of lactic acid).
Wonderful texture is the first thing I notice. Chewy, rich, wheat adds a very firm suppleness and the beer is very nicely attenuated, quite dry and even a touch salty with tart berry acids adding brightness in concert with the light lactic character. They’ve achieved a ton of expression from whatever strawberry method they’ve used (almost seems like it must be puree, but who knows). Moderate amounts of engaging carbonation, no alcohol or flaw and a crisp, wheat and berry-laden finish make this one perfectly quenching as a good berliner should be.

Chalumeaux with this 500 ml bottle share.mVery dark brown around the edges. Black center, thin ring of head around the snifter. Aroma is mellow whiskey, light red grape hint (talking subtle) chocolate. Flavor is sooooo subtle.

The blending of the port and whiskey. No alcohol noted anyplace. Body is full but not chewy. Mild lingering whiskey finish. VERY nice.

Draught at Five Horse, Davis, 4/20/17.
Pale blonde-lemon juice body with a gentle haziness and small, but dense, well-retained, white head atop.
Excellently juicy hops yield light stone fruits with plentiful mango, ripe pineapple and lots of lime and tangerine. The oats and grain dry the hops out nicely towards the finish, which is clean with no dough, resin or alcohol. Surprised how much tight, clean, juicy hop character they got out of this little guy.
More lemon, tangerine, light mango and other charming, juicy, hop notes abound atop a dry, but soft, oat-laden texture with low but fairly engaging carbonation. Juiciness lingers very lightly on the finish, but some of the malt/oat character cuts it a little short; not necessarily a bad thing. Comes off incredibly sessionable, clean and flavorful.

Its pretty sad when I have to buy this out of state because my area of NH doesn’t seem to see much Stoneface. End rant. Bought at Colonial Spirits canned 5/5/17. Hazy murky deep grapefruit yellow with a huge tightly bubbled white head that lasts forever. The nose is dripping with citrus. Light orange and overripe grapefruit abound. Sweet bready malt and light pine and earth with just a hint of alcohol round this out. The flavor is mostly juice and resinous alcohol. There’s a bready toasty maltiness in the flavor that seems to clash a little with the fruitiness but its a pretty tasty beer.

On tap at Whole Foods Bedford. Hazy light golden/ deep yellow with a small but fleeting bubbly white head. Tart lemony nose with sweet berry and just a hint of sulfur. Tart puckering lemony berry flavor. Pretty nice use of strawberry in a sour ale.

Draught at Ginger Man Boston, 3/31/17.
Lightly hazy, blonde-flaxen-golden body is topped by a large, white head that shows moderate retention.
Lots of lactic acid and very well-attenuated peach character in the nose with minimal spicy pit character (seems like just juice). Rather grainy, very strong wheat character behind it considerably dries out the already very stark, austere aroma. No flaws or anything but it’s not terribly juicy or harmonious here.
In the flavor it is indeed very dry, grainy with only traces of honey-like malt and lots of lactic acid and light plastic character. Furthermore the carbonation is very loose/unfocused creating a very watery texture that further highlights the grainy, dry nature of the beer instead of focusing it to get some creamy consistency.
