Description
Initiated by 3 young graduates, the Ninkasi was born from a simple idea: to implant the concept of American micro-breweries in France. This project was completed in 1997 and takes place in Lyon, on the Gerland site. In 2012, the factory moved 50km from Lyon, to Tarare more precisely. The new playground for our brewers has a capacity of 5,000 liters per brew (i.e. 23,000 HL / year).

Bottle at Chris_o Shindig. Some dark/reddish malts. It’s not Scottish. Red flemish sour. Vinegary. Pretty yuckish. God that’s terrible, with terrible candy sugar too. I think it was infected.

Bottle at London Gathering Nov 05. I must have quite liked this because I remember topping the tasting glass up from the bottle after I had finished it. Cloudy pale gold colour with very thin white head. NIce fragrant hop/citrus/yeast aromas. Bit oakey? Soft in mouth with good blanche lemon flavour and touch of woody yeast n the finish.

Draught at the brewery
Black color. The aroma has very little of a beer, it’s pure Espresso coffee. Quite dry; strong coffee, burnt malt, caramel flavor with a touch of liquorice and light sourness, but too watery at the end. Extreme.

Draught at the brewery
Red color. Quite nice fruity aroma (strawberry candies); but the body (fruity as well) is too thin and dry.

Draught at the brewery
Dark amber color; nice head. An excellent brew, well malty (with caramel, strong bitterness, nuts..), good body structure, velvety; quite close to an Abbey Dubbel or English Strong Ale.

Bottled. The helpful waitress wanted to serve this with a shot of raspberry syrup, but had no problems to serve it to me unblended. Cloudy pale yellow with lively creamy head. Citric aroma with notes of red berries. Less acidic than the original Berliner Weisses, and also maltier. Tart, yet rounded with some citric acid present. Ninkasi's rendition of Berliner Weisse is more accessible and less hardcore, but still feels genuine. A good one!

Sampled draught at the brewpub.
Intransparently black. Very roasty with loads of coffee. Really dry with rounded, bold maltiness. Grassy bitterish finish with a touch of metal. Very similar to a certain Irish product.
