Description
Located near the stunning Mont Saint-Michel World Heritage site, La Chouette is produced in the cradle of France’s cider-making region. Cider-making has been a part of Pierre-Henri Agnes’ family tradition for three generations. Like Norman farmers of their time, both of Pierre-Henri’s grandfathers crafted traditional farmhouse cider (“cidre bouché”) with cider apples from their orchards or by buying cider apples and using the services of a mobile cider press and mobile Calvados still (a very popular approach in the 1940s to 1970s). When Pierre-Henri and his friend Alex decided to launch their cider company, Pierre-Henri remembered the story of an owl that would fly over his grandfather’s farm and dwell under the roof in the main building where his grandfather would store the fermenting apple juice. That owl was Pierre-Henri’s inspiration for the brand, La Chouette, which means “the Owl” in French.

Amber pour, somewhat cloudy and without much of a head. Nose is sweetish, apples, dry but warming. Tastes sweet, again very much natural apple juice feel to it. Light biterness and a bit of funk. Smoky touch in the finish. Dry. Good, albeit a bit simple perhaps.

330ml bottle. Golden amber colour, off-white foam head that dissipates away and fruity apple aroma. Taste is sweet, juicy apple with some crisp tartness, vanilla, caramel and light funk. Medium bodied, slightly spritzy carbonation, dry tangy finish. Nicely drinkable.

33cl bottle. As Le Cidre Perche. Poured ambery color with a white head. Ripe apples, sugars, mild funky notes. Flavor has sweetness, ripe apples and sugars. Way too sweet. Aroma promised better.

Just a random grab from a grocery in Paris. Pours a rosy clear with white fizz. Fruity apples and syrup nose. Taste definitely on the sweet side, nice apple crispness to it. Overall a little to sweet for me

Shared bottle at Mi2 at Cardinal 12.09.16. Golden. Off-white head. Fantastic aroma of apples and apple peels. Similarly taste, with a hint of pears and smoke. Slightly astringent. Excellent. And excellently quaffable!!! Medium carbonation.

330 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.5%. Deep golden colour, pours sparkling with a moderate white head that actually lasts a while. Aroma of cider apples, hints of caramel, oak and sulphites. Medium sweet flavour, surprisingly rich moutfeel for its moderate strength, notes of cider apples and sweet eating apples. Again hints of caramel, oak and sulphites.
