Darker than usual ESB named after the bull terrier. Off-white, loose, creamy head, reddish bronze colour, clear. Strong caramelly, nutty and chocolatey malts in the nose, blueberries, dates, pepper, bark, nutmeg, tobacco. Restrained fruitiness, refreshing, crisp, medium carbo, smooth nutty maltiness, caramel, abruptly replaced by a confident peppery and leafy, very long hop bitterness. Atypical for the style but a very enjoyable ale.

Sampled @ GBBF. Brown color, red glare coming through, virtually no head. Smell and taste malts, quite some roast, earthy bitterness, dark malts and the slightest hint of dark chocolate. Average body and carbonation.

Cask at the 2014 GBBF. Murky dark brown coloured pour with a halo of light tan head. Aroma is tart berry, earthy nutty malts, some barnyard. Flavour is nutty roast, earthy with some berry hop. Tangy fruit and roast lingers. Decent. Cask at the brewery. Nice rounded roast. Smooth tangy berry. Palate us medium full and creamy. A bit better at source.

Bottle from the Cartmel village shop. Appearance - a lovely cherry auburn colour with a nice head. Nose - red fruits over biscuits. Some caramel too. Taste - more red fruits with ginger biscuits. Palate - close to medium bodied with a crunchy texture and a long dry malty finish. Overall - lovely ale.
