Description
Odd Side Ales is a family of gifted individuals, focused on the shared goal of crafting unique products, while maintaining the utmost quality.

Our story began in 2010, as a micro-brewery producing craft beer from our pub located inside the historic piano factory in Grand Haven, Michigan. We quickly outgrew the pub’s brewing capacity and now, after three different expansions, brew from our own 44,000 sq. ft. facility.

Our main focus is to creatively stay on the leading edge of craft beer styling. While maintaining a large core of year round and seasonal favorites, we strive to introduce new recipes that push the boundaries of flavor combinations and craft beer categories. Everyone at Odd Side Ales is here because they have a true love of craft beer, the industry as a whole, and the people who drink and enjoy what we are able to do each day!

Beyond Michigan, we now distribute to Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky. We hope to continue our growth, expanding our reach even further, and share our craft as far as possible!

Golden ale from Michigan flavoured with coffee - an unlikely ingredient perhaps in blonde beer styles (though common in porters and stouts these days), but I had several other blonde ales with coffee and sometimes the combination works well. Medium thick, opening and thin, snow white, loose head on an initially clear but later misty yellow blonde robe with apricot tinge. Aroma of indeed coffee in a sugared kind of way but certainly recognisable as such, white chocolate, breakfast cereals, ripe pear, cherry blossoms in spring, ripe melon, vanilla extract and a persisting scent uncannily similar to Cécémel. Clean onset, sweet with a sourish but refreshing, mandarin-like side note, hints of pineapple and ripe pear, softishly carbonated; slick and thin, even rather watery mouthfeel. Sweet pale maltiness, notes of melon, pineapple and mandarin subtly continuing and accompanied with these odd Cécémel and white chocolate elements, with the coffee powder providing some mildly astringent spiciness in the end as well as a bit of dryness - much needed, because hops remain very understated and the faint bitterness which is present, seems to be generated more by the coffee than by hops. The lack of hops does not help the already thin and watery feel, but the overall flavours are admittedly fascinating, with the coffee behaving less spicy and bitter than expected - instead, this whole beer feels like a light, sweet, mellow, summery quencher with odd but pleasant aromatic effects. Quite distinct and enjoyable for what it intends to be.

12 oz. can from Total Wine. Pours a clear yellow-gold color with an off-white head and great retention. Almost no lacing. Sweet chocolate and light coffee aroma. Like their Pumpkin beer, this S'mores version doesn't have much s'mores taste. It tastes like a regular Bean Flicker with some added vanilla and smoky notes and a little sweeter too. A little misleading, but still good. Medium-light body with medium carbonation. No bitterness.

Red wine barrel aged imperial stout from this craft brewery in Michigan, bottle from Mr. Hop shared with Craftmember. Thick, dense, moussy, regularly shaped, pale yellowish beige head over a black beer with thin mahogany edges - in fact a very dark hazy chocolate brown. Aroma of blackcurrant skins, soy sauce, old wood including vanilla, cocoa nibs, some dry red wine but not overly pronounced, coffee, ground walnuts, ovomaltine, beech tree leaves, raw 'haricots verts', hard caramel, old leather, whisky, tobacco leaf. Sweetish onset but subduedly so, hint of ripe blackcurrant mixed with soy sauce-like umami, softly carbonated with full oily body, yet never too syrupy; lovely walnutty, fondant-chocolatey and toffeeish malts form a dense, harmonious core upon which soft tannic woodiness is built, oddly paired with a 'green' accent (chlorophyll, as it were), all followed by warming, somewhat whisky-ish alcohol, in which red wine is only fainly noticeable - yet structurally important. I was expecting more vinosity and tartness from a wine barrel aged stout, but truth be told, this is a beautiful creation regardless, with lots of 'shifting' flavours and a deep amount of complexity.

12 oz. can from Total Wine. Pours a pitch black color with a light tan head and good retention. A few spots of lacing. More spiced aroma versus stout aroma. The taste follows the nose: Fairly standard pumpkin pie spices in a mild stout base beer. A little thin for a stout. A nice change from regular pumpkin beers, but the stout is more color than flavor. Medium-light body. Medium carbonation. Not bitter. And the 7.5% ABV is warming, but mostly hidden.

12 oz. can from Total Wine. Pours a hazy yellow-gold color with a white head and great retention. Good lacing. Coffee-forward aroma. The coffee flavor is very subtle, like a white stout, and I barely taste any pumpkin spices. Medium body and medium carbonation. Not bitter. Slightly sweet. An enjoyable beer, but not much of a pumpkin beer.

Can from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clear brown with a finger of off-white head that lingers. Banana, walnut, vanilla and cinnamon all over the nose. More of the same on the palate. Not overly sweet...fairly balanced. Whiskey and oak notes sit in the background, but overall a nice barrel aged beer.

Pours black with a light tan head. The aroma is of bourbon, chocolate, and spice. The flavor is pretty bourbon dominated with underlying chocolate, pepper, and roast malt. Very good.
