Description
Burdock brewery set up shop in what used to be an old Portuguese chicken restaurant, and they transformed the space into an artist-driven bar/restaurant/music hall/microbrewery run by a group of musicians and music lovers. They offer a rotating list of clean pale ales, complex saisons, crisp pilsners, zippy sours, and beer-wine hybrids that are all brewed in house.

(750ml bottle from the brewpub bottleshop) Pours hazy medium pink with a small white head and no lace. Aroma is quite funky in overtone, mulchy slightly farty barnyard and wet musty leaves, below that are plenty of red wine skins and associated red berry notes of cherry and red field berries, some wood, and a nice saison yeast presence as well. Flavour is lightly sweet and lightly to moderately tart up front, funk is less aggressive than the nose and allows space for the grape skins to breathe, nice cherry and lingon-adjacent pinot character, good tannic structure, soft fruity esters, herbal bitterness and solid tannins building middle to finish though and the barrel becoming more prominent, some cellar-type Brett mustiness too. Dry bitter lightly mineral finish, lots of wood and tannic red wine skins, dried herbs. Medium bodied, filling but not prickling bottle condition type carb. Lovely red wine ale without a dose of it like Burdock often does, but solid wood and tannin structure giving an unusual bitter profile for variety. Great summer sipper.

750ml (thx, Peter K.!) @ Ryan's shared with Farees. Appearance: a bit hazy pale golden like champagne with a weak white head and bubbles constantly going on. Aroma: tons of grapes, some manur, funk, and barrel very complex. Taste: along the same lines, a bit dry and woody. Overall: good one.

355mL can, pours a cloudy yellow with a small white head. Aroma is full of floral dry hops, biscuity malt and a little lacto. Flavour is gently tart, with subtly tart stone fruits, floral dry hops, and biscuity notes. Simple but pleasant. Alright. --- Beer merged from original tick of Nula on 19 Oct 2019 at 03:24 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 7.5. Original review text: On tap at Burdock, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out lightly tart citrus, a hint of farmhouse character, and an even slighter hint of hops. Flavour is tart and citric, with tart citrus, farmhouse notes, and some gentle dankness. Tart, citric and farmhouse-y. Damn, this is a complex pale. Excellent.

(375ml bottle c/o Herbalist, thanks!) Pours nearly clear gold with a small white head and no lace. Aroma is definitely adjacent to oaky Riesling, with candied lemon, soft peach, smooth white wine, touch of tannin, acidic pale berries (not explicitly sea buckthorn), quite some decent oak, some minerality, moderate earthy funk. Flavour is moderately tart and lightly sweet, wine-adjacent for sure; soft and zesty lemon, soft stone fruit, the mineral saline bite of sea buckthorn, wet rock, hay-like funk not out of line with natural wine, oak is pretty soft compared to the nose, drying in the finish, lingering lemon/orange fruity bite and minerality. Light bodied but slick and almost oily, near-flat. Very smooth, not overly complex nor simple, with good quenching balance from the adjuncts. Tasty.

Tasting at Ryan's, bottle
Hazy blond colour. Interesting blended aroma of Madeira and Saison, sweet. Quite vinous, moderately sweet, with some Saison tones. Woody. The wine character is strong, the final result is very good.
