Description
Burdock brewery set up shop in what used to be an old Portuguese chicken restaurant, and they transformed the space into an artist-driven bar/restaurant/music hall/microbrewery run by a group of musicians and music lovers. They offer a rotating list of clean pale ales, complex saisons, crisp pilsners, zippy sours, and beer-wine hybrids that are all brewed in house.

On tap at Burdock, pours a clear dark brown with a medium beige head. Aroma has a nice earthiness, with soil and toasted malt. Flavour is dry, with gentle earthiness and dry toasted malt. Seems authentic enough, but not particularly interesting.

On tap at Burdock, pours a clear blonde with a small white head. Aroma brings out light piney hops, toasted biscuity malt, and light straw. Flavour has a bit of a muffled hop expression, with earthy hops, a touch of pine, and bready malt. Not the clearest hop expression but nothing wrong with this structurally.

On tap at Burdock, pours a clear golden amber with a small white head. Aroma has plenty pulpy orange juice, hibiscus, and a touch of piney hops. Flavour is dominated by the hibiscus, followed by orange juice; the hops are drowned out and there’s not much malt backbone. Not my thing.

375mL bottle, pours a cloudy maroon with its a small white head. Aroma has a ton of red grape skins, red wine tannins, and plenty of bugs. Flavour is extremely vinous, with intense red wine tannins, oak, grape skins, and loads of wild yeast. Wonderful beer/wine hybrid, blending the best of red wine with wild yeast expression. Excellent.

355mL can, pours an opaque muddy peachy pinkish red with a small white head. Aroma has plenty of fuzzy raspberries, some lacto, and light sugars. Flavour is simple, with juicy raspberries, some pith, lacto, and some residual sugars. Not complex at all, and tastes like a fruited kettle sour, albeit a slight step above the average quality one. Okay, but far from Burdock’s capability.

355mL can. Pours murky pinkish red. Underripe raspberries and fresh grass on the nose. Flavour has underripe raspberries on top, dried grass, grass clippings. Mouthfeel is almost seltzery. Pretty average fruited kettle sour; pretty disappointing for Burdock.

Can from Great Grog. Hazy pale golden body with a pale white head. Lively carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of straw and minerals. Flavour of white grape and lemon. Thin to medium body with a slick texture. Very fizzy. Bright and refreshing.
