Description
Powderkeg are freedom-loving beer obsessives carving our own path with curiosity, creativity and defiance; this is free-thinking beer.

But what is Free-Thinking Beer? We look beyond the established ideas and opinions to revolutionise a style to create something fresh, interesting and always outstanding. In Cut Loose, we re-imagine a classic German-style Pilsner by pepping it up with New Zealand hops; it’s a great example of how moving past traditional techniques can elevate a beer beyond expectations. For maximum accessibility our beers are also Gluten-Free and Vegan.

Bottle from Asda and drunk at home. Clear amber colour lasting white head. Toffee lager aroma. Toasty caramel malt flavour. Lager drinkability. Some interesting pepper hop on the finish it’s fine. No failures just a bit too much caramel up front for me with a hoppy drying f8nish some bitterness. Ok.

Keg at the Beerhouse, Bury St Edmunds. Deep golden with some carbonation and a ring of white head. Pineapple and grapefruit sit alongside a light resinous character in the aroma, but it’s far from ’bursting with hops’. It’s like drinking a proper APA with a light cold: you get some of the aroma but it’s muted. Taste is the same. Bittersweet and threatening to be flavourful but it never really gets there. Sounds like I’m being harsh in the rate, but I actually like this a lot. The balance and flavour is spot on but I want more, more, more. I’m all for the ’British reserve’ in a cask bitter or mild, but with an APA you just gotta go for it.

Cask-conditioned, on gravity, at the Tucker’s Maltings Festival, 28/4/2017. Light amber, with a slight, off-white, head. Easy drinking beer, with plenty of citrus fruit, some rich tea malts, grassy hops, a touch of caramel and moderately dry finish. Good.

Cask gravity at Reading BF 2017. Clear gold lasting white head. Some citrus hop on the aroma a little thin in the mouth. Bitter finish. It’s ok not exciting. Not much malt or yeast just bitter hops with some citrus flavours.

Bottle at a tasting. Not really clean, lots of yeast-derived fruitiness etc. No extra beneficial ingredient-derived character, seems rather off.
