Description

(Draught at De Drie Dorstige Herten, Utrecht, 27 Feb 2020) Dark brown colour, almost black, with creamy beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of caramel, dark bread and coffee. Malty taste with chocolate, dark bread, caramel, a touch of smoke and a mild roasty bitterness. Almost full body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty and warming winter beer. Nice one.

10% on the label, Quadrupel, the beer is called. Dark brown color, head disappears instantly. Sugary, somewhat yeasty aroma with apple. Sweet sugary flavor with some coffee, cinnamon, coreander and bits of roasted malt. Alcohol in the flavor, in spite of the sugary sweetness. Lacks some balance, but maybe that will come with ageing, the beer is still very young. (6 3 6 3 11 = 2.9) Tap @ Borefts 2012. Dried fruit and caramel in the aroma. Caramelly sweetish, alcoholic flavor with dried fruit. Hint of alcohol in the finish. Re-rate: I’m still not enthousiastic about this beer. Yeasty aroma and flavor with hints of milk chocolate. Raisin and pear in the flavor. Must be the yeast. I recognize it as yeast from the Grafschafter Brauhaus in Nornhorn.

Gift from brewer Carine Kelder, the beer is (for the time being) not available for sale. Just a bit darker as gold, very steady creamy head. Smoky aroma, but certainly not agressive. Malty, creamy and a bit soapy. Just a bit smoky flavor, more smoked cheese as smoked ham. Apricot. Very flowery. Just a hint of metal. The smokiness is very subtle. not the harsh smokiness you’ll find in Heller-Schlenkerla beers. The balance nears perfection, absolutely clean in the aftertaste. Just a tad thin. A very good beer, maybe not suited for the inexperienced palate, although it is very much a beginners’ Rauchbier. This excellent beer deserves a good spot on the Dutch beer market!

The only bottom fermented beer from this brewery, brewer Gert Kelder said. Straight from the lager tank. Only a touch of yeast in the aroma. Malty falvor with some roasted malt. A distant fruitiness. Just a tad thin, but shows promise. Re-rate: same brew, bottled: caramel, butter and peach in aroma and flavor. Full bodied. Just a hint of diacetyl. Nice and easy going typical Dutch bock. the 2007 version is totally different from former brews. Still bottom fermented, but with loads of roast and dark chocolate in the aroma. Fairly dry with a long roast aftertaste, in which flowery hops are clearly traceable. More a stout than a Dutch bock, but I like it.
