Description
The Florence Brewery first sold beer in September 2007. Later in 2010 its offshoot the Head in the Hat Brewery started activities. The Florence was during 2016 rebranded as Craft Academy and was used intermittently, primarily as a training facility for its owners, with some beers sold in the pub, although Craft Academy beers sold more widely through the Greene King estate are from the main facility in Bury St Edmunds. By the end of 2018 it seems even these activities had ceased, but the brewhouse remains in place.

Cask at the Southampton Arms, London on 20th May 2014. Clear copper with off-white frothy foam. Mild agreeable malt aroma. Rich malt and leafy hops in-mouth with a developing, solidly bitter finish. Light texture and plenty of body. Well-crafted, very drinkable beer.

Bottle at home, from ABM, 29/05/14. Clear golden with a well appointed off white covering that retains well. A good looker - I feel this beer has already recahed its rating climax!!! Nose is biscuit malt, stale bread, light caramel, musty tones, dull fruit, old curtain. Taste comprises pale malt, light honey, bready pangs, light caramel, floral notes. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close with light bitterness. So very so sub par nonsense, mostly liberated down the sink - why waste the beer cals?

Bottled (from AbM). Golden colour, small white head. Aroma is citrusy, some mild floral notes as well as some sweet maltiness. Flavour is a nice maltiness along with some mild citrusy and herbal notes along with very mild nectary sweetness. Not much to do with IPA (even the English style IPA), rather is is just a straight forward golden/blond ale. Actually a somewhat decent one.

Bottle at home, from ABM, 05/03/14. Clear golden with a good sized off white head that retains well. Nose is bread dough, light spice, metallic nip, light citrus fruit, hint of toffee. Taste comprises bready malts, biscuit notes, light spice, summer fruits. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, crisp and clean. Looks and feels the part, just not a whole lot going on at the business end.

Keg at the brewpub - London. Pours clear, dull gold with a creamy white head. Doughy pale malts in the nose with hints of citrusy meringue. Light-medium sweet flavor with more bready, doughy pale malts, some tangerine and orange, very low bitterness. Light bodied with average crbonation and creamy texture. Nicely balanced on the finish, further pale bread, orange, light hay and pine needles. Very drinkable but basic APA.

Bottle at Beer Rebellion. It pours clear golden with a thick white head. The nose is sweet, fruity, pear drops, earth, toasted grass, candy, cheap white bread and metal. The taste is earthy, grass, dough, good deal of bitterness, pear drops, grapefruit rind, sweet biscuit and pepper with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Interesting/odd stuff and ultimately a bit too sweet.

Bottle from Drinkmonger. Crystal clear golden body with a thin white head that quickly fades. Very light carbonation. Faint lacing. Sour aroma of stainless steel and grass. Flavour of earth, grass and lemon. Slightly sour. Thin body with a watery texture. Weak fizz. Not great, but I did finish it.
