Description
The Florence Brewery first sold beer in September 2007. Later in 2010 its offshoot the Head in the Hat Brewery started activities. The Florence was during 2016 rebranded as Craft Academy and was used intermittently, primarily as a training facility for its owners, with some beers sold in the pub, although Craft Academy beers sold more widely through the Greene King estate are from the main facility in Bury St Edmunds. By the end of 2018 it seems even these activities had ceased, but the brewhouse remains in place.

Earl Of Essex. Cask. Almost clear gold beer with a bubbly white head. Smooth palate, semi dry. Modest carbonation. Mild floral bitterness. Touches of soap and apples. Mildly bitter orange peel before a light dry finish. Soapy bitter aftertaste. A bit rubbish really.

26th July 2013
Drafthouse Tower Bridge. Cask. Light haze on this golden beer. Little white head. Palate is smooth and slighty soft. Immediate juniper spice. Light dry malt. Touch of marmalade hops. The hops integrate well with the spice here. There is no cinnamon or chilli or anything of that ilk, it’s all floral spice. Finishes semi dry with the floral spice going in to the aftertaste. Interesting and tasty.

Cask at the Florence. It pours cloudy gold with a small white head. The nose is wheat, earth, hay, soft orange, light toast and spice. The taste is smooth, wheat, light bitterness, floral, touch of spice and tangerine with a dry finish. Light-medium body and s oft carbonation. Nothing wrong with it, just fairly uneventful... So-so.

Cask gravity dispense. It pours clear amber with a a minimal white head. The nose is juicy marmalade, floral, peppery juniper and bread. The taste is soapy, potpourri, light astringency, pepper, caramel and a touch of bitterness with a dry finish. Medium body and low carbonation. Taste doesn’t live up to the aroma. Interesting, but not terribly drinkable.

Cask at Wandsworth London Beer Festival on 6 July 2013. Poured a very cloudy amber with almost no head. Slightly herby aroma with the spice and sweetness of the juniper. Bready malts initially with some bitterness and a definite gin note on the palate.
