Description
Artisanally brewed in Amsterdam since 2011.
Combining influences from the rich European beer culture with a non-conformist attitude.
From a family heritage of Swedish farm brewers and trained by the masters of ale and porter in England, we ended up in the Netherlands to create our own microcosm in the world of beer.
Inspired by the lesser known sides of European brewing culture and devoted to uncommon artisanal techniques, Butcher's Tears makes distinctive beers that progress beyond fashion and convention.

Smaak is zoetig, lichtjes zurig, gebrand.

BBE 07/2026. Murky dark orange colour, medium-sized white head. Sweetish fruity, caramalty, a bit bready nose. Medium-bodied. Quite mellow and easy flavour. Some caramalt and fruityness but much watered down. Some alcohol too. Not exiciting.

Can from De Bierkoning, Amsterdam. Stone fruits and malt, bit ripe fruit, apricot, soft pine, ripe orange. Medium bitter and light sweet. Bit of a throwback IPA, which I appreciate.

(Draft at Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 1 March 2026) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, slightly bretty nose with funky yeast, vinegar, citrus, grapefruit, coffee and cacao. Malty, roasted, tart taste with notes of coffee, brett, vinegar, citrus, red berries and a tart and vinous finish with a fairly low roasty bitterness. Full body, with a touch of sweetness. Complex stuff, with coffee, chocolate, vinegar and brett. Not for the faint hearted, but quite interesting. Very nice.

Tap at Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 14th January 2026. Entitled Monster Soup SSS Keeping Edition, think it’s the same. Tart and chocolatey, thinnish, interesting

Medium body. Redelijk bittere afdronk.

Bottle bought from the forin devil keg bar at GBBF 25. Black. Just Black. Not particularly glossy or inky or anything like that. Thick foamy beige head. Aroma has liqourice and tar (Finnish candy* stylee). Although the Cottage Pie induced smells I am omitting is not doing me any olfactory favours. Having fanned, I am also getting mocha, seasonal spice and berries. Flavourwise we again have tar infused liqourice with espresso and a berry streak. Although the edge is bitter more than sour. Underlying salted caramel and the berries also have a touch of sweetness. Medium-heavy bodied. Oily. Soft-average carbonation. Long dry astringent finish. Punchy Stout, telling 0.5 points short of being an Impy. I like this brewery a lot.

(Draught at Arendsnest, Amsterdam, 15 Aug 2025) Hazy golden amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Fruity nose with notes of apricots, orange peel and floral hops. Fruity, hoppy taste with apricots, orange peel, caramel, grainy malt and a mild citric/floral bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Tasty and well balanced. Nice one.
