Description
Artisanally brewed in Amsterdam since 2011.

Combining influences from the rich European beer culture with a non-conformist attitude.

From a family heritage of Swedish farm brewers and trained by the masters of ale and porter in England, we ended up in the Netherlands to create our own microcosm in the world of beer.

Inspired by the lesser known sides of European brewing culture and devoted to uncommon artisanal techniques, Butcher's Tears makes distinctive beers that progress beyond fashion and convention.

Tap at the brewpub. Clear brown with dense beige head. Sweet malts with a light roasted touch, plums, caramel, dry wood, red apples, light fruity and grassy hops. Medium sweet and bitter. Solid medium bodied. OK.

From tap @Het Lagerhuys, Amsterdam, poured into a snifter. Pitch black, small frothy tan head, mostly diminishing, light lacing. Aroma roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, peat. Taste roasted malt, chocolate , some licorice, earthy notes. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, lingering roasty sweetbitter aftertaste, coffee groundings, very earthy feel, to be honest too much.

Bottle bought for me as a present from Holland. Cloudy amber-brown, with more of the latter in this respect. Strong barley-wine with a minor sweetness in its taste, malts and wood otherwise. Has plenty of nose and aftertaste, and is fairly crisp within its style.

Bottled 11/11/19, about 2,5 months ago. Pours a deep amber colour and an off white head with a little retention. Aroma's: your usual BT mossy yeast, dusty, fruit. Retronasal it's even more mossy and dusty, mouldy almost, bitterish and fruity. Flavour is moderate bitter and just faintly sweet and sour. Medium bodied. Soft carbonation. Finishes shortly with some sourness, then above moderate bitter.

(Draught at Foeders, Amsterdam, 30 Aug 2019) Black colour with creamy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with chocolate, coffee and dark bread. Malty, roasted taste with notes of chocolate, coffee, black rye bread, a touch of citrus and a balanced roasty/citric bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, dry. Tasty, but a bit sharp and unbalanced. Quite nice though.

Bottle. Almost black. Toffee, licorice and oak in the aroma. Full bodied. No carbon whatsoever. Sticky. Malty sweet flavor with caramel, roast, licorice and loads of oak. Bitter walnuts. Nice but certainly not perfect.

On tap at Foeders, pours black with a tiny beige head. Aroma brings out soy sauce, with low roast and a touch of balsamic. Flavour brings out charcoal, soy sauce, and a touch of toasted malt. Lacking body and depth. Meh.
