Thanks to beerbill for this one - turbid ruby pour - thick, lasting lace - nose is dominated by diacetyl, with some herbal hops and overripe fruit underneath it - diacetyl is fairly strong in the flavor, but the hop profile is big enough to eventually wash it out - some overripe apple acidity - some caramel and toffee - there are a few decent things happening, but there is too much diacetyl to overlook.

Bottle via a trade with beerbill. Pours with a tan head that fades over a bronze body that’s a bit hazy. Aroma was sugary, brown sugar, molasses, corn sugar and candy corn. Taste is sugar, wet malt and cantaloupe. Dry and messy. Ouch!

Bottle thanks to cavie (plus another one in a trade from beerbill). Pours with a hazy golden body and a fading white head. Aroma of sugar, caramel and wheat. Taste is sweet, sugar, and toast. Fizzy.

Bottle at first DC tasting of 2010, tasted after the 07 and 08. This was the lightest of the three. Still no head and no lacing. Aroma of apples and vinegar. Flavor had unbalanced tartness and sweetness, with lots of alcohol, and no body or complexity. Our Newport flight was a rapid descent, and this one crashed and burned.

Bottle at DC’s first tasting of 2010. This one is even sweeter than the 07, and alcohol is even more evident. Less malt character, and less complexity. Mixed sweet chocolate and slight sourness, but not well balanced.

Bottle at first DC tasting of 2010. Dark maroon color with no head and no lacing. Aroma of alcohol and phenols, with toffee, vanilla and roasted chestnuts. Flavor of creamy chocolate, but alcohol shows through. Nicely complex. Nicest of the three Newports tasted (07, 08 and 09), but more subtle alcohol would help this one out.

Bottle shared at the DC local tasting. Pours a translucent copper amber with a creamy, white head. Aroma has some tropical fruits. Flavor is sweet, sticky fruits, booze. Finish is boozy. Not really good. Maybe it needs more time in the bottle. Maybe.

Bottle sampled at the DC Local Tasting. Pours a translucent, brown with a creamy white head. Aroma is fruity, apples, pears, honey, flowers. Flavor is a little off, sweet and fruity, but a little tart, honey, caramel, but nothing is working together. Finish is sticky and a heavy lasting sweetness. Something’s not right here.

Bottle: Poured a deep hazy brown color ale with a tiny foamy head with minimal retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry figs and raisins with some caramelized sugar and light alcoholic phenols. Taste is also dominated by loads of dry figs and raisins with some toffee and caramelized sugars – maybe a bit too much of the raisins come out with a finish that is overly sweet. Body is above average with minimal carbonation and light apparent alcohol. Not bad though not something I would have regularly.

Bottle at Chriso’s Kook Tasting 09. Copper colour, haze, very thin head. Barley wine-y. It’s a pretty decent barley wine. Fine.
