Hazy brown ale with a thin moka head. Light malt and cherries in aroma with orangey notes. Sweet malt and good resinous hops, piney, with wine grapes notes, nuts, and chocolate. Medium to rich bodied. May 2005, Capflu’s BW tasting.

Red orange BW with no head. Classic BW aroma of grapes, molasses and candy sugar. Sweet hoppy concoction with oily mouthfeel and florral hops. Rich, and rather simple. Enjoyed at YEHa!05 Christmas Party on Dec. 17th, 2005.

Bottle number two that I’ve had now. And it still releases a putrid DMS aroma right upon uncapping. Further sniffs show smoked beef and pork, oily, warm cheddar cheese, light rotten veggies, old, wet, rotting mint plants. Caramel fits in there as well, though you can not help but note the DMS front and foremost. Flavor is not as dominated by rotten veggies, but there is still a strong undertone of it. Spoiled meat that’s been left out warm too long. It’s too bad too, because there is some well-done roasted malt, touches of smoke and sweet honey-caramel in there. Alcohol is well-concealed as well. Mouthfeel shows light carbonation, moderately loose bubbles. Retronasal has light smoke and roast, with just a hint of hops. Baked bean skins and veggies linger on the aftertaste. Some candied apples, cherries and toffee in there as well, but every time I try to drink more, the cringe-inducing veggie finish makes it not worth the well-malted beginning. Light lager yeast notes, definite pils malt, much like in the ’03. Not vinous, not very warming. Clear auburn-caramel, layers of bronze, beige and amber, to a dark mahogany in the center. Head recedes immediately to cover and then is gone in short time. To the drain.

A hazy amber beer with a disappearing beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of prunes and over ripe fruit, and gooseberries, as well as hints of the alcohol. The flavor is very sweet with strong over ripe fruit notes, as well as wood, and alcohol, leading to a dry spicy end.

2005 bottle at Julio’s Spring Beer Fest, 4/02/05. Cherry red mixes with light amber-brown for the body, which is clear, with a small, but somewhat well-retained beige-yellow head. Aroma of pine hops, sweet coffee and cream. A touch of caramel and some light fruitiness. Flavor is well-balanced, with some honey-cream, dry roast and well-extracted malts balancing against an easygoing hops bitterness, that is not too drying. A bit astringent as it warms, however, with a peppery, disruptive carbonation. Medium body, with no wateriness.

2005 bottle from DYCSoccer17, thanks Casey! Shared at the 3/6/05 Montreal tasting. Aroma of brown sugar soaked in vinegar, spoiled grape pulp, sour yeast. Appearance is a clear, weak olive-brown with a fleeting dark beige head. Flavor has strange chemical/solvent notes, some butter, raisins and sourish/sweet light soy flavors. Brown sugar is faint, alcohol peaks through. Body is medium-light with an artificial fizziness. Not many good things to say about this one, but I will say that it’s hard to believe they would produce a new beer this bad, so I will try another bottle in hopes of it being better.

Cloudy orange-brown body, thin off-white head. Caramels and light fruit (incuding lemon) attempted to fend off skunky hops aromas but mostly failed. Skunky, leafy hops dominated the flavor which was otherwise mostly big caramels, toast, sweet brown sugar, and a hint of lemon. Full-bodied. There may have been a hint of cardboard in this beer too. I wasn’t too offended by this beer, which had its good points, but I am probably being generous with my rating. Provided by John (JCW) and sampled with Brodie and BelgianGirl.

2004 bottle. Clear, filtered pour, light yellow with some very light orange and almost green tints. Perhaps a hint of light rosy peach tinges as well. Rapidly disipating white head. Aroma of citrus hops, predominantly lemon and orange rind. Opens up with a chewy, sweet caramel flavor redolent of one of those caramel chews that came in a square. Loses some of the caramel and fades to honey-sweet pils malt, with a touch of earthiness from the Maris otter. Hops provide much of the flavor towards the finish of this beer, with a leafy, fuzzy, lightly citric flavor, not terribly bitter. Hops profile reminds me slightly of Harviestoun Bitter and Twisted, though the same hops arent used. The body is medium-light, with some wateriness, but never really tastes thin due to the texture and light syrupiness of the pils malt. Alcohol is well-masked and all-in-all I enjoyed drinking it as a session beer with some spicy food.

Bottle. Pink tinged peach-orange color body with rosy copper hues and a very hazy, sediment laden look. Peering in to the bottle, it has a large dose of sediment sitting at the bottom. Small white head, very rapidly dissipating. Aroma of pure noble hops, cut with alcohol and sweet, sweet, sweet honeyish malt. Light caramel and toffee butt in, but the alcohol still asserts its dominance. Despite the alcohol, and the shudder I have upon first sip, it grows on me. Perhaps because the hops are so well controlled and flavorful. Perhaps because this beer makes ample use of the malt to try and mask the alcohol, instead of using the hops. Maybe it’s just a nice change of pace, but this is tastey stuff. Who put this in as an ASA???

2004 bottle. Pours a rich dark, oily oak brown, with dark tan tinges on the sides of the glass. Small beige head, plenty of lacing. Another filtered beer for the day, oh well. Aroma. Hmm, we’ve got some smoke in here, quite nice, very subtle, lots of roast, good amount of milk chocolate, caramel, touches of vanilla and coffee with plenty of sugar in it. Slight notes of earth and maybe even an old wood like smell. Flavor begins with the smoke, just a touch; hickory beef jerky, though missing the saltiness. Moves in to some mild milk chocolate, notes of subdued roast character and finally a bit of roasty bitterness intertwined with very subtle low bitterness hops. Body is medium, but it has no thinning or wateriness. Notes of marshmallow and cocoa lingering on. If you took Stone’s Smoked Porter, took out the saltiness and licorice, added in some more chocolate and took away a bit of the body, this is what you would end up with. To be honest, the subtle smoke is all that really reminds me of Stone Porter, but I like it. Enjoyable and easy to drink. A bit too filtered and lifeless tasting though.
