Cask, handpump at The Trigger Pond, Bucknell, Oxfordshire on Loz’s birthday Sun’ 14th November 2010 amber with a white filmy head. This is tangy, fruity, simple and uncomplicated and an ok if unexciting session beer. A6 A3 T6 P3 Ov12 3.0

Combined rating from Willow Walk and Samuel Peto pubs. Second sample better than first as no diacetyl. Baked blackcuarrant and sour liquorice flavour. Just bizarre. Can’t tell if it is work of genius or just not quite right in terms of flavours. The sour baked elements I like. Crazyness in a glass.

Cask @ Society Room, JDW. Dark brown / dark red colour, beige head. Aroma is roated malts, little fruityness. Flavour is roasted malts, coffee, blackcurrants. Well done.

[Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading] Deep ruby-brown, negligible head. Dryness is dominant, but there’s some sweetness behind. Flavour is quite strong on blackcurrant leaf, rather than the actual blackcurrants themselves. There’s a fair bit of sourness behind, as if the balckcurrants used weren’t quite ripe. The roasted malt of a stout is fairly well hidden behind this. I was looking forward to a rich stout enhanced by a rich Ribena-type flavour, and this wasn’t it. Overall a very unusual beer - something I would normally welcome, but it didn’t quite work for me in this case. I ended up feeling the blackcurrant leaf flavour would have been better used in a golden ale than a stout.

Cask at Standing Order, Edinburgh, Scotland. Black colour, beige head. Aroma of chocolate, black currant, hard roasted malts. Flavour is blackcurrant, coffee, bit of chocolate, roasted bitter finish. Light bodied.

Cask at the Old Manor (JDW), Bracknell. I was really looking forward to this one as I’m a fan of the Wadworth brewery and addicted to blackcurrants - but in the end I found this rather disappointing - the chocolate malts almost completely masking the fruit.
The colour was deep mahongany with a ring of cream head; the aroma was rich and chocolately; the consistency was rather heavy with a dry chocolate flavour to start, then some sweeter fruit appeared, but these were not obviously blackcurrants; the finish was dry and biscuity.
A good stout, but not what I was hoping for.

Bottle. Creamy white good mostly lasting head. Amber colour. Moderate malty and light hoppy aroma. Surprisingly swet and light bitter flavor. Average light bitter finish. Oily palate.

Cask at the Square Bottle, JDW, Chester. Poured near pitch black with a medium head. Aroma was roasted malt and blackcurrant, quite faint. Taste was blackcurrant to start and a blackcurrant and roasted malt finish. Couldn’t taste its 6%. Not much stout like qualities to it, not that impressed.
