Bottle – Poured a golden brew with a nice head. Aroma of sweetness from the cascade hops is killing me. Carbonation is ok with average body. Taste is just incredible, huge creamy and sweet taste with a lingering aftertaste at the end. I thought this one was overrated since I couldn’t understand how a pale ale could be rated so high, I now understand.

Dark with ruby highlights and a creamy head. Malty aroma and a flavor that is malty with just a little hop and roast malt bitterness. California answer to the Yuengling Porter that I sampled with this. Overrated, but a good gateway Porter.

Big ol’ 24 oz bottle, rated 8/22/2005. Original rating moved to the draft version. Light brown body, pours a "dirty" fluffy head: that is, it leaves little bits of lace as it fades. Nice hoppy smell, no slap in the snoot. Taste is a clean balance of caramel and bready malts with a good package of hops. Just as much fun from the bottle as on draft.

**Number 200** 2003 This has really smoothed out since I first tasted it 10 months ago. This is a slightly hazy orang-amber beer that struggles to show any surface foam whatsoever upon pouring. The aroma is bready, almost obscured from the grapefruit hoppiness that is still powerfully present as it approaches it's first birthday. At this point all flavor aspects have mellowed considerably, producing a smooth, creamy body that just coats the tongue lightly as it goes down. Check back next year, but I can't imagine it getting much better.

2004 Edition: didn’t care for the 2003 edition as much as I like the 2004 edition... maybe my tastes have changed, or something. Beautiful deep orange color, nice fargin’ head. Smells of lovely hops, grapefruit, and pine. Tastes luscious this year... 2003 edition. Paid $7.99 for a 6-pack. Great appearance: beautiful burnt orange color, with a huge, fluffy head, that retains well and laces nicely. Absolutely gorgeous!! Wonderful citrus (grapefruit) scented ipa... mmm, looking forward to tasting this. Edited: OK, so I finally finished my 6 of this, and I have to say, I really didn’t enjoy this beer much at all. I don’t see why there’s so much hype about it. It’s funky bitter, and leaves an almost unbearable aftertaste in my mouth. Love IPAs, but not this one.

dark brown with mahogany highlights, nice thick head, lots of lacing... ...a bit stinky in the initial smell, kinda rotten almost... but it went away... ...coffee, chocolate, and a hint of orange in the flavor... yum. REALLY GOOD mouthfeel, one of the better ones!! A bit too sweet (and bitter) to drink all the time. But a nice effort!

Nice amber color... I do like the way beers this shade of amber look... Not much of a smell... oh well. Nice smooth, floral taste, but not great. After seeing how many people really like this one, I felt disappointed. It’s drinkable... but really, there are better beers out there.

Thanks Rate Beer! I would have tried this ages ago, but I avoided it thinking it was some spiced up winter beer. Then I found Rate Beer and it said it was an IPA! And a very nice IPA too! This has a beautiful hazy amber color that supports a fine thick head. The aroma an flavor are well balanced providing hops and malt in abundance. Smooth with a lingering finish. I'll have another one.

It is easy to see why this is a benchmark beer. It's high quality, assertiveness, and ready availability have made it the beer that is "American Pale Ale". It's simplicity is classic, yet refined. A beer that is good to come back to from time to time with never any regrets.
