(Bottle 50 cl) Presumably a historic ale from Scotland from times when heather rather than hops were used as bittering ingredient. Beautiful amber, filtered with a creamy head. Has some gingery notes, but it’s probably from the added sweet gale. A very interesting beer. 290804

Bottle: Poured a light hazy brown color ale with a nice beige foamy head with pretty good retention. Aroma of gooseberries is easily detectable along with some malt and weird spices. Sweetness is overwhelming and well balance with the malt. Nice refreshing drink with some originality.

A hazy orange beer with a nice creamy off-white head. The aroma is very spicy and sharp - I can’t really pick out the individual parts - but I pick up honey and grapefruit. The flavor is weird - a lot of wheat and a lot of spices - though I can’t pick them out - not even the gooseberries. The mouthfeel is very smooth and the end dry and a bit watery.

Light roasted chocolate and coffee aroma. Quite black, creamy brown head. Retsina flavors, cinnamon, strawberries, moss. Fullbodies and somewhat sticky. Surely this beers mother is a hamster....

This is the only time I have had this beer. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy bronze color with a small tan head. The aroma is very odd - sweet and piney. The flavor is thick sweet malt and a strange piney element as well. Sweet smooth pine sol.

I had this beer once about a year ago and do not remember being very impressed. I have not gone back to it since until now when curiosity got the better of me. I will not make the mistake of avoiding this one again. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this interesting brew pours a dark black color with a small tan head. The aroma is sweet malt, light berry and a hint of chocolate. The flavor is strong with roasted malt on the front and slides gently into a fine berry flavor accompanied by chocolate and coffee. There is a rather pleasant sweet roasted malt and fruit finish. The fruit is definitely noticeable but does not overpower this beer leading to a far nicer experience than you get with most fruit beers.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a dark foamy head with average retention. I can only describe the aroma as a strange mix between roasted malt and semi-sweet fruit (kind of remind me of Weyerbacher raspberry impy stout). Taste is also a mix between the elderberry sweetness/sourness and the bitterness coming form the roasted malt. Overall, I would say that I enjoy this because it is out of the ordinary and that seems refreshing.

[Cask at Volunteers Arms, GBBF, 2004] A brown beer with a small beige head. The aroma is sweet with primary notes of caramel. The flavor is sweet roasted with notes of caramel in the beginning and middle, to be taken over by notes of yeast in the end.

Bottle Pours a very light hazy orange/amber with a faint short lived fizzy head. Only a thin line of lacing. Aroma is of pale grains, wheat, like a heffy but a little sweeter and a slight fruity note of pears and peaches. Flavor is quite tart. Apples and pears mostly, quite dry and sour. Lively carbonation. I hope for a litle more fruit flavor in a fruit beer. This tastes more line a bitter hef.

Orange-yellow with a reddish tinit. No head. Smells sweet, fruity, and kinda plain. Flavor is slightly skunky and has a weird slightly fruited flavor, but not really a fruit you’d want in your mouth. Odd, not great.
