Description
The Brooklyn Brewery started with a dream to return brewing to Brooklyn, once a powerhouse of American beer production. Today our beers travel to more than half the United States and over thirty countries. Our James Beard Award-winning Brewmaster Garrett Oliver and his team brew everything from classic styles to bold experiments and collaborate with brewers, innovators and artists from around the globe. We’ve met wonderful people in remarkable places, and we can’t wait to show everyone what’s next.

In 2016, Brooklyn Brewery sold 24.5 percent to Kirin, Japan’s second-biggest brewer. The partnership allowed Brooklyn Brewery to use Kirin’s distribution arm to sell in Japan and Brazil.

Light amber in colour with a thick dense pale white head. Aroma of definate spice primarily hinted with cinnamon and pumpkin. The taste carries a very sweet pumpkin-y flavour and bitter end spicyness. Not a bad beer, but not great.

Very dark brown (a chestnut) colour...very dark for a 'pale ale'. Somewhat sweet smell, but one similiar to an english bitter. A strong malty flavour, not much noticable hops. Somewhat sweet taste, but slightly overwhelming. A strong initial taste, but very thin and a very long bad tasting aftertaste.

2010-2011 Batch (Fresh): Pitch black, as usual with a very thin, tan head. Aroma of molasses, permanent marker and some light anise. Full-bodied; Pungent biting malt with a lot of licorice, anise, chocolate and long-lasting pit fruits and prunes. Aftertaste is pungent and long-lasting, filling as well. Overall, a nice beer, definitely can use some time to mellow though - the alcohol is very noticeable on this fresh batch. Good, but will be much better in two years time or so. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle pulled from a four pack, fresh in the season on 12-March-2011 sampled at home in Washington. Rating for this sample: 8,4,7,3,15 2010-2011 Batch (5 Years Aged): Still similar to the rating above, still relatively harsh bit bitter nuts, earth and chocolate, along with a less than opaque dark brown colour, but there is still a solid three centimetre tall deep brown head. Overall, a good beer, but this isn’t as good as some of the other vintages, even after five years. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle during the Blizzard of 2016 on 22-January-2016, about five years after the last big winter storm here in Washington. Score for this rating: 7,3,7,3,14 2004-2005 Batch/2003-2004 Batch Vertical Tasting:
The 2004/5 batch had almost no head, was slightly more clear and had much more of a chocolatey & roasty aroma than the older bottle. The 2003/4 bottle had a very nice head, was slightly more opaque and was much more mellow, had the alcohol hidden well and was fairly light in comparison to the new (fresh) batch. We’ll see what a year does, when the last three vintages will be sampled. I sampled these two beers on 24-December-2004 and my score for this sampling is:
2004/5: 9,3,8,4,16
2003/4: 7,4,7,3,15 - After 1 year.

2003-2004 Batch:
Pitch black in colour with trillions of small bubbles rising from the sides of the snifter. Brown coloured head with very small bubbles which lasts a long time. Pungent aroma of dark pit fruit, roasted malt, chocolate and a bit of coffee. Medium-bodied; Silky mouthful; Strong roasted malt flavour with very noticeable chocolate and coffee highlights. Some of the pit fruit and even cherry flavouring is noticeable towards the finish. Aftertaste bittered from the crazy amount of malt, but left sweet from the residual sugars. Overall, this beer is great yet another year...and is worth picking up. Lets see if it handles age well! I bought a six pack of this vintage, so lets see how it does for the next six years! For this rating: 9,5,9,5,18

2002-2003 Batch:
Insanely black in colour, looks as thick as a Sam Adams Triple Bock, but completely black with a creamy brown head. Great malty-caramely portery-stouty smell! Great inital flavour, and a tremendous lasting taste...nothing too strong as the colour and body would suggest!!! A great all-around beer that rivals a Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout or anything else! For this rating: 9,5,8,5,18 2001-2002 Batch:
Very little head; Port, cherries and milk chocolate are noticeable in the aroma. Light-bodied; Quick short aftertaste of dark chocolate. The smoothest and easiest to drink of the 3 (2001-2004) bottles in the Vertical tasting.

[quality seems to have waned in the last few years, esp. with the bottled version] I had this after a meal, and it was so heavy it pushed the food down and yelled, "make way!" The deep, ruby-red color and sweet fruit aroma are very inviting. The flavor is similar to the aroma, heavy with fruity sweetness (grapes, apples?), but not overly sweet. This finish is a mix of hops and alcohol that is the only thing about this beer that I find "so-so." Brooklyn should abandon its other beers and concentrate on making this and their black chocolate stout. Mmm, mmm, good!

Tasted at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company Microbrew Fest on November 9. Honey-colored with with a minimal head. Dry hops flavor with a decent finish. Not on the same scale as the Black Chocolate Stout but decent nonetheless.

Tasted at the Barrelhouse Brewing Company Microbrew Fest on November 9. One of the top 5 beers I tried at the festival. Pours how you would expect liquid dark chocolate to pour. Surprisingly lively tongue with chocolate (duh), clover and well-masked alcohol flavor. This is great stuff!

A very decent IPA. It has a smooth, hops & flowers kind of flavor. Not among the best, but certainly second tier. Even though it only has 6.9% alcohol, there is a noticable alcohol bite in certain sips.
