Bottled. A deep red beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, spices, and butterscotch. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, roasted malt, and butterscotch, leading to a dry malty finish.

A hazy brown beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel and spicy herbs. The flavor is sweet and primarily with notes of herbs and celery, but also some roasted malt, giving it a dry end. The body is somewhat thin.

500ml bottle bought at Fenaknoken in Oslo. Decent, beige lacing-head atop of a deep mahogany coloured body. Inviting smell of herbs and earthy malts. Semi-sweet grainy malts in flavour with hints of chocolate, supported by notes of resinous hops towards the ending. Well bodied compared to the rather low alcohol strength. An unusual and highly drinkable ale, unfiltered and unpasteurised (shared with Finn, Tromsø 21.04.2010).

500ml bottle to celebrate the release of my new book on Early Modern Witchcraft. The bottle was bought at Fenaknoken in Oslo some weeks ago. This traditional Norwegian ale scores heavily on aroma which is delicious and inviting with its fragrance of sweet butter caramel and rounded liquorice. Moderate off-white head over a deep dark mahogany body. The flavour does not quite match the smell, but has still got something to deliver; lightly roasted grain and malt mixed with tart fruits and berries. There is also notes of minerals and hop resin. It all ends up with a vague sourish-bitter touch. The downside is a watery mouthfeel (at home, 01.06.2007).

Flaske 0,5l som Rune spanderte. OK kremaktig skum som imidlertid forsvant helt. Syrlig&krydret aroma. Smaken er fyldig (for styrken). Litt frukt. Søtlig bitter ettersmak. KI=3

Bottle 0,5l. Dark golden brown colored. Unclear. A small white head. Aroma of an ale with fruity notes. Inviting. Soft mouthfeel. Fruity flavor with notes of juniper. Well balanced. A good beer!

Hazy golden with small white head - nice malty and hoppy aroma - taste has the same nice combination of malt and hops, there is olso hints of yeast - nice beer

50 cL bottle, courtesy of Papsoe. Pours hazy yellow with a huge white head. Aroma is phenolic and citric, light spiced. Bitter, citrusy and somewhat off-citric flavoured. Mild malty, slight fruity and citrusy. Bitter and dry finish. High carbonation mouthfeel, mild citric touch and very foaming head to me indicates a slowly developing infection.

Flaske 0,5l på Olympen, Oslo 17 Feb 10. Lys gylden på farge. OK skum som flatet helt ut. Litt uklart. Tung fruktig aroma. Smaken er avdempet fruktig. Litt vassen men god. Fruktige innslag i ettersmaken - og litt gjær.

Bottle 50cl. @ The Danish Summer Gathering Tasting, TSODRBSG09.Clear medium to dark yellow orange color with a small to average, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white to white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, moderate to light heavy hoppy, orange. Flavor is moderate to light light light heavy sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average duration. Body is medium to light, texture is watery to oily, carbonation is soft. [20090822]

Dark brown with a light brown small head - hints of coffe and malts - nice bitterness that lingers into the finish - ok beer

Bottled. Dark brown body with a medium tan head. Relatively vague aroma of light roasted malt and juniper. Flavor is slightly roasted malt, some fruit and juniper, low bitterness. Quite thin body and short finish. There is something promising here, but the potential is not completed.

500 ml bottle @ Cardinal. Mahogany body with a medium, dense tan head. Nice, gentle aroma of sweet, light roasted malt, caramel, fruit and juniper. Flavor is fruity, sweet malty, juniper, some coffee, hint of fruity acid and balanced bitterness. Tasty and balanced and has a surprisingly rich flavor for only 4,5% alcohol.

500 ml bottle, bought at Fenaknoken, Oslo. ABV is 4.5%. The label advertises "Vikingfestivalen 2009". Dark brown colour, big to moderate beige head. Interesting aroma of juniper, resin and hops, hints of lightly roasted malts, some smoke, mild coffee and chocolate. The mouthfeel is fairly thin and dry. The flavour is dominated by juniper, the finish has some coffee and resin and is otherwise dry and "dusty", with just a slight acidity.

500 ml bottle, unflitered and unpasteurised, bottle conditioned traditional Norse ale. Available at Ole Simon, Sandnes. Very dark brown colour, floaties from the sediment, creamy tan head with greyish tones. Distinct and unusual aroma of juniper, resin, fresh tar, woodwork and caramel, some less pleasant notes of ammonium too. Moderate natural carbonation. Very pleasant to drink, malty with lovely juniper notes, a subdued roastiness, hints of smoke, not too sweet. Pleasant aftertaste with roasty and resiny notes. Very interesting beer!
