12 oz hand bottle shared by tjthresh, courtesy of BBB63 - enjoyed at the csbosox tasting on 3/7/08. Pour is brown - mahogany with only thin white bubbles for a head. Aroma of candy sugar sweetness, caramel and some roastiness. The smokiness is in the nose, though pretty muted. Taste is grainy and sugary; rye almost. Traditional Porter flavors, along with the smoke, emerge in the middle through the finish. Huge thanks to both Mike and Tom!

draft - Pours dark with a light malty aroma and a thin head. The flavor is very malty, but has a good hops balance as well. The body is on the thin side for the style and is lightly carbonated.

draft - Pours yellow-amber in color and has a light hop and caramel malt aroma. The flavor is good and hoppy with enough malts to give it some body. It’s alright, though pretty average for the style.

Taste from growler at Chicago Beer Society meeting & Randy Mosher birthday party, Dec. 1. The guy who brought it said this was their "small beer." Pours brown and little cloudy, with a yeasty smell. In my well-used sampler glass, it kicked up a respectable lacy head. Definite English session beer. A distinct Burton water profile. Decently done.

Sample taste from growler at Chicago Beer Society meeting & Randy Mosher birthday party, Dec. 1. More hastily scribbled notes from the tail end of a homebrew club meeting! Let’s see... I wrote "Still yeasty but nicely peated - proper color — pours light head." Well, I do remember liking this quite a lot for being, yes, a good standard ale of indeterminate shillings. I will have to work on a trip to Lighthouse Place so I have an excuse to visit, cause if I’m going to Michigan, I’m saving my beer money for Bell’s or New Holland...

Sample taste at Chicago Beer Society meeting & Randy Mosher birthday party, Dec. 1. Another barleywine? Why, sure! I’m thinking this is still a very young BW, of course. It’s pretty yeasty, too, so it needs at least a few more months to settle down. But at this stage, it can still offer up a whallop of malt flavor, with strong caramel, toffee, and lighter bourbon notes. Not much hops to speak of just a strong bitter presence to balance out the malt bill. I will definitely want to check out the brewpub itself and revisit this stuff at a later date.

Sample from growler at Chicago Beer Society meeting & Randy Mosher birthday party, Dec. 1. Beer pours cloudy looking, but I was pleased to find it’s not yeasty tasting (I’ve had too many brewpub offerings lately that seemed full of trub). Offers a plain, straightforward bouquet of those Centennials and Cascades, with, I suspect, a hint of Amarillo. In other words, unless you really like hops, the unmistakable twang of cat dander. So most folks will love it or lump it.
