Description
We started brewing in Burton-Upon-Trent in 1834. Then in 1898 we got itchy feet. So we moved down the road to the Albion brewery. We still like it so we’ve not moved again since.

We came to Burton for the water. Well, for the rocks the town was built on to be precise. The water trickles down through a thick layer of gypsum before we bring it back up again through our well. That’s what gives our beers the depth of flavour, character and crisp refreshing bitterness that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

(Draught at Monk’s Café, Stockholm) Black colour with creamy pale brown head. Roasted nose with notes of coffee, liquorice and some sourish citrussy hints. Roasted taste with notes of coffee and liquorice, some initial sweetness turns into a drier, rather salty finish. On the thin side. Not one of the best stouts around, but still ok.

Cask handpull at Penderels Oak, JDW, Holborn. Copper colour with thin beige head. Earthy bitter. Slightly syrupy with the malt. Yeasty aroma, some mineral. Some sharpness. Some green apple, too sour to be pleasant. Malt/hop/yeast is out of balance.

Bottle from Morrisons, Banbury, 20-04-07. Poured warm golden colour, some caramel on the nose. Taste a touch sweet (caramel again) but very easy drinking as the bottle says this is ’deceptively strong’ I was merrily gulping this without really much consideration to the abv. Less bitterness and complexity than I’d hoped but a reasonable beer.

500ml bottle from Sainsbury. Copper colour with thin beige head. Slighlty more malty than normal Pedigree on aroma, less yeasty and more toasty. Alcohol is crude and unintegrated. Some biscuity malt, but really the alcohol is just all over the place. Bit of Burton snatch.

Cask at The Butchers Arms, Oakerthorpe, Derbyshire. As I was born and bred in Staffordshire I’ve drunk an awful lot of this beer over the years. It seems thinner and less sharp now than I remember it to be. Nevertheless, this was a well kept pint; clear amber; a touch of sulphur; a fruity body, and a bitter finish.

(Bottle 50 cl) Pours a clear, amber golden with an off-white head. Nutty nose. Quite full-bodied with notes of caramel and roasted nuts - almost coffeeish. Some sweetness and quite alcoholic. 170407

500 ml can. Typical nitro-can pour, slowly seperating to give a creamy off-white head above a gold body; stale, malty aroma; more flavour than most of its type, and a definite Marston’s feel to it - quite fruity and dry at the same time. Overall not bad for a nitro-bitter.

Cask. Beautiful clear dark copper colour. Green apple flavour, a bit rough, but OK. I do not care much for the apple notes, but it seems to be more rounded than other bitters. Finishes nutty. Very standard bitter with no flaws. But boring, IMO.
