Cask at The Anchor, Digbeth, Birmingham. A dark reddish brown pour with a bubbly white head. The aroma is rich, fruity and smells like a barrel aged ale! The flavour is malty, fruity and it has that rich alcoholic barrel aged feel to it too. A stunning, heart warming Christmas brew!

Bottle 500ml.Clear medium orange colour with a small, virtually none, fair lacing, fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, nutty, caramel, dusty malt, victorian furniture. Flavour is moderate sweet and light acidic with a average to long duration, dry, caramel, thin fruity tart. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is flat. [20120805]

Bottled@chriso. Amber colour, small head. Aroma is mild toast, some sweet malts, fruits and some slight spicyness. Flavour is bitter fruits, wood and some slight herbal and grassy notes.

Brown bottle conditioned beer, 500ml, best before 03/2010, drank in 02/2010. Poured into a vase shaped pint glass (Old Speckled Hen), slowly because of the sediment within the bottle. Beautiful deep dark ruby red body with a huge tan coloured head, looks a picture. The thick, creamy tasting head stayed throughout the tasting, lovelly. Malts rule the roost in the smelling stakes, roasted, rich and plentiful. Smooth tasting, very smooth, deep lush malty feel to the flavours, a slight hop bitterness is in the taste but secondary to the roasted/toasted malts. Pale, Crystal and Black Malts are used in the gist, a blend of unmentioned hops with flaked and roasted barley according to the website. I can see where the taste comes from after reading that! Very impressed, would love to try this in cask form.

Feb 2010: known as Red Rock Traditional Bitter back then! 500ml brown bottle, the beer is bottle conditioned so it was poured slowly and carefully into my vase shaped pint glass (Old Speckled Hen badged). The beer had a slight haze to its appearance, even though I thought I’d managed to keep all of the sediment in the bottle. The beer was a lovelly copper colour, a fine foaming off-white head sat on top. The head left some heavy lacing as the beer sank in the glass, I like to see that, shows good conditioning in my opinion. Hops aromas hit the nose and they certainly give the beer a typical English Bitter flavour, meaning a bitterness to the ale. Bog standard Cooking Bitter with an easy drinking blend of semi-sweet malts and semi-bittering hops. Twiggy, not citrussy or piney in any way. I suspect it's a re-named beer because this brewery seem to have a few 4.2% Bitters in their portfolio.
